Title: User Artwork
Post by: Dulcamara on September 27, 2007, 07:36:02 PM

Here's where users can post their own artwork. Again, since this IS the internet, post at your own risk. If there are restrictions you want on your work, please post them with the work. Again, all skill levels welcome, so long as the art is (morally) decent.

Center of Hearts
-Dulcamara

This actually makes a very nice wallpaper for one's computer desktop. I put my icons around it, so that Christ is the center of my desktop. ^_^

I'm using it myself, and invite everybody else to use it for their own desktop if they'd like.

Please don't redistribute it, though.

I didnt draw this, I just thought it was a nice picture. This was drawn by GENZOMAN. This picture is of Shiro Masuda of Amakusa the leader of the Catholic Shimabara rebellion in Japan in 1637. I'll post an article on this rebellion later. Please do not redistribute. Go ahead and download for your desktop.

She can dislike my pictures... in fact, she can hate them.  I'm fine with that.

As far as talent goes, I'm pretty happy so far.  Mixing colors and getting what I want out of them is the most challenging aspect.  I enjoy blending colors and getting some gradation.  Thats the most enjoyable part as far that I'm concerned.

Hi Joan,

It's true this forum section is for religious art generally but I interpreted this particular thread to be general.  I got that from the disclaimer that started the thread.

If my pictures do not belong here, by all means, they can be removed.

Funny enough, with all this talk of reverence and fearing god, this is precisely why I do not do religious themes.   I feel that my results would not be reverent enough.

That's right... this thread is for "user art" ... which means it doesn't have to be religious. It just has to not be offensive/blasphemous.

Serious pieces and doodles alike are welcome here, as well, so anybody (regardless of talent) can share if there's something they  would like to.

oh by the way, i like the first big picture! :scratchchin:

it's great to know it's your computer's desktop, Dulcamara! :rahrah:

Currently (since then) I've got the Pieta over an interesting wallpaper someone else did. But I started a while back to use something religious for my wallpaper, and since then it's become a rule with me. Even if I have something else behind it, there has GOT to be some space for God there. It is nice because then, as I spend so much time on my computer (when my head is so forgiving) I will always have something there to bring my thoughts to where they should be.

Unrelated note to other posters in this thread: Please do not post anything that is not your own work (or someone you know personall whom you think will not mind). Eg, please do not post old holy cards and what not... I'd like to observe copyright laws as strictly as possible here. Rendering to Cesar and all... (No I don't agree with the strictness of some laws, but I'm sure we will be blessed for putting up with them for obedience's sake.)

If you know the artist personally, and you know they won't mind, great. I, for one, do my best not to visit sites that break the law.

Hi Pedro, I enjoy the unusually low point of view, and the foreground grass is very well done.  Did you use separate photo-reference to compose a picture ?
Title: User Artwork
Post by: Vandaler on June 18, 2008, 12:58:52 PM
You basically answered my question, I recognized that the foreground was not in the original plane you must have drawn from and wondered if it was using photo-reference since it was one of the most realistic looking part.

I was just messing around, and then I realized what I was doing; portraying Joseph as a protector from darkness as he was a protector and head of the Holy Family. I thought it was pretty neat myself, I was quite proud of that picture. THanks for the remark.

Great pics, Matto! I was struck on St. Joan... I never thought someone would still draw her! But is it really true that she cut her hair short?

Here's one drawing I've seen that she had a long hair.... I wonder who's really true...

Thank you, Joan. I am not sure why I gave Joan short hair. Possibly because I was influenced by the silent movie the Passion of Joan of Arc which is the most powerful film I have ever seen. In that film, in which the dialogue is based on the actual transcripts of her trial, Saint Joan has short hair. If I had to guess, I would guess that in real life, Saint Joan probably had longer hair.

The picture you posted is far more beautiful than mine.

As some of you already know, I love selling my art via the Internet, and when a Catholic image sells my heart leaps because it gives me hope; people in the world are starving for Catholic images.  Many of my sales come from novus ordo Catholics who still appreciate the inspiration from a Catholic image.

So I am trying to get my website inventory increased and have created a gallery of Catholic art images, mainly watercolor paintings but a few photos also.  These images can be purchased as prints in various sizes.  You can click the image to see the sizes of prints.  They are printed by Fine Art America, and handled by them, my cut is very small.  My reward is knowing that Catholic images are available.  Serving God is my goal.

Yes, I have other themes there as well, but the joy of selling the Catholic art is so thrilling to my soul, I can't begin to tell you.

If you enjoy one of the images, you can also just purchase a greeting card through Fine Art America of the desired image.

Also if anyone wants me to paint a particular saint, I will do my best and there is no obligation to purchase, I just love the challenge.  You can send me a picture, or I will find one myself for reference.   I am currently working on St. Theresa.

Thanks for looking.

I created this image from a photograph I'd taken of the outside of the Guadalupe Cathedral in downtown Dallas, TX.  The exterior shows it old history beautifully.  Futher, I was inspired to add in the figure in prayer, eternally devoted, for you can tell that it is a spirit.  Anyone who may be interested I do have a larger size of this as well.

I have previously posted one version of this photo; however, I also wanted to share a variation.  It was my attempt to present an angel in prayer.  Again, I convey the spirit of the angel by making the figure slightly transparent.  Please forgive the size on this page.  I know it's rather large.

Browsing through the pages here I've seen that several people hold Joan of Arc in high regard.  It was actually through this saint that I was called back to the Church so she has very special significance to me as well.  The attatched is a manuscript page I did including the coat of arms given to her family by Charles VII.  The script is from an interview taken during the retrial in which she was vindicated of her prior accusations in which someone is giving his first hand account of Jehanne prior to the defeat of the siege of Orleans.

After many years of experience and observation, I think I can say with certainty, that you most likely DO have more than a smidge of artistic talent.  The desire is the seed.  Some people have that gift of photo realistic drawing, but with practice anyone can draw and paint.  You just need the right materials and the time and discipline to practice, and some help from the saints.  I hope you get the chance to make some art.

Thanks, that's very kind of you.  I haven't been at the writing very long.  When I'm ready to sit down, calm and clear, I try to put down the letters one by one.  It hardly does justice to the old work of the monk scribes working by dim candle but as I move forward I think I'll get more control of it.

I look at art the way I'd look at running.  Yes, some people have that extra ability that will put them in the olympics or on a pro sports team but nearly everyone still has the ability to run.  Fast or slow... who cares?  Never thought twice about it as a kid... you just did it because it was fun.  Sometimes you're flushed and out of breath.  Sometimes you trip over your own two feet.  Big deal.  Turn into a kid and just do things for no other reason than they're fun.

I think of these religious all of the time, of their patience and insight into souls.  So many of their tiny paintings convey powerful expressions in the eyes and so forth.

I wonder how many hours a day they spent working on a psalter or the like?  I wonder if it's true that they used the stomach hairs of sables, which are naturally curved to make paintbrushes?  What did they eat, or were they fasting constantly?

I did find out that female religious did a lot of manuscript work, also.

Elizabeth, I came across a book called The Tres Riches Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry.  The publisher assembled reproduction manuscript pages beautifully.  It's as if I'm holding the originals.  I was very lucky to find it at Halfprice Books for a bargain.  The paintings going with the script are amazing.  The entire manuscript is Biblical in nature from saints to the Apostles to Christ.  The following link is the best online display I've found of the manuscript and it's worth a browse through... http://www.christusrex.org/www2/berry/f17r.html

I did these both 8-10 years ago when I was coming out of the NO and started  attending the Indult. (No longer at either one!)
They were sculpted in clay and poured in bronze.
I never had an art education but I was always inclined towards art and sculpture- these were my first ( and my last) real pieces.
Looking back, I would have done them differently. Maybe I will have a chance in the future to do just that.
Most Traditional priests that have seen the bust of Our Lady took it to be a more modern representation.. a little too current and worldly looking- I can see that now.
Our Lord (side view here) I still like, but from the front has a head tilt- not a strong image " Christ the King" ( My NO was showing) More like  the sorrowful Christ.
Anyway, technically I think they are pretty good, but I can no longer work in bronze as it costs thousands of dollars a pour. ( only one of each was ever casted) I still have the molds from the original clay, however.
Someday I will go back to it, God willing.
