  • The Abbot Theodore od Pherme possessed  three good books. When he came to live near Abbot Macarius he said: "I have three books whose reading is good for me. Now the brothers ask to borrow to receive benefit from them too. Tell me what should I do? "And the Abbot said," What you are doing is good, but even better is to possess nothing. "When he heard these words, the brother went and sold his books and gave to the poor

  • St Anthony of Desert 4th century - 'Men will surrender to the spirit of the age. They will say if they had lived in our day faith would be easy. But in their day, they will say, things are complex; the Church must be brought up to date (Vatican 2) and be made meaningful to today’s problems. When the Church and world art one know then that those days art at hand (beginning of thee End). Because our Divine Master placed a barrier between His things and the things of this world.

  • An elder said: we do not advance in virtue because we do not know our limits and that we do not have the patience to continue what we started. We would prefer to become virtuous without any trouble.

  • A brother came to the Abbot Theodore of Pherme and begged for three days, to make him a word of salvation. The Abbot, however, did not answer him, and brother left, while saddened. So a disciple of Father Theo, he went and  met the judge and his companions. The judge asked him:
"Tell us, the Old man, where the cell of Father Moses is? "
The Old man said: "What do you want him? He is a heretic and a fool! "
The judge went on his way, arrived at the church of Skete and said to the priests:
"I have heard of the Abbot Moses and came came a far distance to see him. But we met an old man who was heading to Egypt; we asked him where the cell of Father Moses, and he said:
What do you want him? It is a heretic and a fool! "
The priests, these words were saddened and said, "How was this old man who told you and the holy man? "They replied," It was very old and was black, wearing a long black garment. "So the young men shouted:
"It was the Abbot Moses in person! But as he did not want you to see it, he told you about himself in these words! "
Deeply edified, the judge went home.

  • A brother came to the Abbot Sylvain at Mount Sinai, and seeing hermits to work, he said: "Why do you work to save perishable bread? Mary has chosen the better part and sit at Jesus' feet and do nothing. "So Father Zacharias said to his disciple:" Give a book to Brother, put it in an empty cell, and he reads. "

At the ninth hour, the brother who was reading began to watch the Abbot hoping he would call him for dinner, and a little after three o'clock, he went to him and said: "The brothers have they not eaten today, Father?

    - Oh! if, of course, they just finished their dinner.
    - Then why did you not call me? asked the brother.
    - You are a spiritual man; you do not need this perishable food, replied the Elder.

Us, we are obliged to work; but you have chosen the better part. You read all day, you can go to eat. "

Hearing these words the brother exclaimed: "Forgive me, Father. "And the Elder said:" Martha is essential to Mary, because it is working because Martha that Mary was able to earn the praise of Christ. "

  • An Abba said that the monk's cell is the furnace of Babylon in which the three young men found the Son of God; but also the cloud through which God spoke to Moses.

  • One brother, who had been insulted by another, wanted revenge. He went to the Abbot Sisoes and told him what had happened, adding: "I will take revenge, Father. "But the Elder begged him to leave this matter in the hands of God. "No, replied the brother, I want to make him pay for what he said. "So the Elder stood and prayed in these words:" O God, we do not need you to take care of us, since, as the brother said, we can and want to take revenge. "

Then the brother promised to abandon all idea of revenge.

  • One of the brothers asked the Abbot Sisoes "If thieves or wild savages attack me and try to kill me, can I kill them if I am stronger than them?" The Old replied:" Not at all. Put yourself entirely in the hands of God. Everything that happens to hurt you, acknowledge that it is for your sins because you must learn to attribute all the provisions of divine wisdom. "

  • Once lived in the mountains a great hermit who was attacked by robbers. But his cries attracted other neighboring hermits who ran and captured thieves. They were sent under escort to the city where the judge put them in jail.

But the brothers were later confused and saddened because thieves had been, because of them, handed to the judge. They went to the Poemen Abbot and told him the whole story. The Old man then wrote in these terms to the hermit: "Remember that carried the first treason and you will know the reason for the second. If you had not first been betrayed by your own thoughts, you would not ever happened to these men back into the hands of the judge. "

The hermit, touched by these words, stood up, immediately set off for the city, entered the prison and freed the thieves whom he spared and torture.

  • Formerly a Greek philosopher ordered one of his followers to give, for three years, all the money he earned to those who insulted him. At the end of this test period, the Master said, "Now you can go to Athens to learn wisdom. "

On entering in Athens, the disciple met a wise man, sitting at the gate of the city, who insulted every passerby. He did the same for the disciple, who soon broke out laughing. "Why do you laugh when I insult you? asked the sage. 'Because for three years I paid those who insulted me and you, you do it for free. - Go into the city, it belongs to you, "replied the sage.

Father John, who used to tell this story, added: "This is God's door through which our fathers, who rejoiced in their many trials, entered the heavenly city. "
