  • I had forgotten that scene. I agree, a brilliant depiction showing Our Lord's compassion for us - so appropriate today.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • So fitting to remember the Prayer of St. Augustine:

Before Thy eyes, O Lord, we bring our offenses, and we compare them with the stripes we have received.
If we consider the evil we have wrought, what we suffer is little, what we deserve is great.
What we have committed is very grave, what we have suffered is very slight.
We feel the punishment of sin, yet withdraw not from the obstinacy of sinning.
Under Thy lash our inconstancy is visited, but our sinfulness is not changed.
Our suffering soul is tormented but our neck is not bent.
Our life groans under sorrow, yet mends not in deed.
If Thou spare us we correct not our ways; if Thou punish we cannot endure it.
In time of correction we confess our wrong-doing; after Thy visitation we forget that we have wept.
If Thou stretchest forth Thy hand we promise amendment; if Thou withholdest the sword we keep not our promise.
If Thou strikest we cry out for mercy; if Thou sparest we again provoke Thee to strike.
Here we are before Thee, O Lord, shameless criminals; we know that unless Thou pardon we shall deservedly perish.
Grant then, O almighty Father, without our deserving it, the pardon we ask for; Thou who madest out of nothing those who ask Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
    Let us pray
O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy suppliant people, and turn away the scourges of Thy wrath, which we deserve for our sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • This brief scene from Ben Hur is deeply moving

Yes, not only does it show His compassion, but also His power, where no one was going to stop Him as they did the others, and the Roman soldier was put into submission ... in this case by just his awe of Our Lord's countenance alone, which the movie did not show, implying it was beyond being depicted (possibly badly) in the movies.  I'm sure that if we were there and could see Our Lord, His countenance, His demeanor, and everything else would be nothing close to what any actor could portray (and they all do Him injustice that way) ... so much of the power from this scene comes from the director NOT showing His face.  It's incredibly well done.  Some were converted just being seen Him and the way He suffered on the cross.

As mentioned, I find Gibson's casting of that woman to play Our Lady and often the way she's portrayed (though some scenes are well done) to be troubling overall and insulting to Our Lady.

  • In his autobiography Charlton Heston made special mention of the performance given by the man who portrayed the Roman soldier. If I recall correctly he didn't have much acting experience or was just an extra but managed to convey
a striking range of emotions, going from anger, confusion, and shame in just a few moments.
