  • This is a new program for discussing Science Fiction/Fantasy from a truly Catholic perspective.  On this first episode he is discussing the book A Canticle for Leibowitz.  I've never read this book, has anyone else?

You can download the episodes to listen to at your convenience.

I haven't had a chance to listen to this first episode yet but hope to tonight.

  • I trust you enjoyed the program Marsha, and will venture forth and read the book.

  • I gave away my copy of a Canticle for Leibowitz away when I was seventeen.

  • A few years ago I read about a third of it, but got the impression following the young monk's death that it was an anti-religious book, so I stopped reading it. Maybe I was wrong. I'm listening to the program.

I didn't get that impression reading the whole thing.

    The author's life is tragic:

Thank you for taking the time to be on the program, I really like to hear the opinion of "regular" people rather than ivory tower ideologues.

And yes, I do plan to read the book. I'm looking forward to future episodes as I'm getting hooked on these "home grown" radio programs.

Let us know where you'll be next.

  • There will be another show with a different guest in about 2 weeks. I am not sure when I am scheduled to be on again.

I am definitely not in any ivory tower. Those are the folk who could not understand why The Lord of the Rings was voted best novel of the 20th century.

I would be more akin to hanging around Minas Tirith myself.
Problem is in the modern world, one is usually stuck with battling it out on Minas Morgul.

I alas can only now be a monk at heart. :gandalf:

  • Ahhhh... another LoTR fan !  What did you think of Jackson's effort of bringing the story to the big screen?  Personally I thought he did a very good job considering the monumental task he undertook.

  • Knowing the books and earlier radio adaptations too well, I simply could not get into the movies. I started watching the first one, and stopped the disc shortly thereafter. If you can enjoy the movies then that is fine and good.

I also refuse to see Jackson's version of The Hobbit. I am going to yet again re-listen to the BBC dramatized version of THe Hobbit.

I try every year to read or listen to Tolkien's works.

Time to pull out the churchwarden pipes and submerse myself back into Middle Earth.
