  • Thank You Nell and Nadir.

I am on page 580 of the Glories of Mary, what a wonderful, beautiful book.  It is so recommended.

I did the same thing with Hostages to the Devil.  I just couldn't read it anymore.  Maybe 1/4 and honestly, I wanted to ditch it.  And thank you for the warning.

I do very much like the books at www.forgottenbooks.com  The books I refer to are paperback.  The cover is half beige and half brown.  Written in the 18oo's. I noticed that you could read them on line, I prefer the book.  They are about the doctrines of the church and such.  They are very hard to put down.  Good reading. I happened to find 2 or 3 in a used book store.  That was how I stumbled on to them.  I wish I could find more.  I get on the webs and look and I know there are more out there. I only have 2 eyes and one pair of glasses. Ha!

Because of the times, I pick up "Luther" and read of his satanic ways.  We have a Lutheran minister who lives next to us.  He never says anything.  When we first moved in 1986 he asked me one time about who will be saved, only catholics?

I just said, "Well, do you believe in One God?" Yes, he said.  There is only One Faith? and he never said anything again.

I wish all my encounters were so easy.  But Sad for him.

    Oh, how tweet it is!

I noticed  a book, "The Lions of Munster" by Fr. Daniel Utrecht, a Tan publisher book.  The priest  (?) is from Toronto Ontario.  Question do we know anything about Fr. Utrecht.  Will this book be ok to read?  I just hate getting books that appear to be ok and turn out to be on the side of Vatican II.

I have one of those books, The Stolen Church by Fr. Virtue.  he took diary parts of a Russian priest in prison during the 40s?.  Published about 1978 and Fr. Virtue was not so full of Virtue.  Three years later he was up for molesting a boy or so.
But the book was 2/3 's his words and 1/3 the diary and he ended the book in support of Vat. II.

I find Fulton Sheen is like that.  He never put "Fr." in his name, when he was "Fr."
He would tell you all you wanted to know about communism and by chapter 6 he would give the "solution", pick the right candidate!  Not the Precious Blood of sacraments, no, pick a man!?  I was so disgusted I felt like throwing the book out.
He writes well as a psychiatrist would but the solutions.  Come to find out he may have been a communist "sleeper".  Wouldn't surprise me!

I've never heard of Fr. Virtue or Fr. Daniel Utrecht. Sorry.  There are so many great authors you shouldn't waste your time on questionable ones.

If it's a TAN book it might be okay, but KEEP IN MIND, that TAN has been taken over by Protestants so who knows what to expect anymore!!!![/i]

If you have any TAN books published before 2004, you can find a title list in the back pages, so use that to check whether any prospective books were dated before the Prots took over the farm.

Another one to be cautious with is Malachi Martin. He was quite progressive and tried to appeal to modern sensibilities, but in so doing a lot of what he wrote was frankly salacious and scandalous.  I was unable to finish Hostage to the Devil, and I never tried to read Windswept House.  I managed to read Jesuits and one other of his books, though. When the author gets into too much lurid detail about impurity and demonic themes it serves to me more toward distraction and inclination toward sin, so I have to steer clear.

My impression of Bishop Sheen is mixed.  He had a very popular TV show before Vat.II, but he went whole hog in favor of the revolution -- at least for a while. There are severe criticisms of how he governed his flock. One woman related the story of how she had seen him alone on a passenger train near the end of his life, and she spoke to him, when he confessed to her that he regretted not having stood up for the Traditional Church and the Mass of Ages, but that it was too late. Apparently when he started to make waves in Newchurch, he was quickly marginalized, and died a broken man. I read a recent report that says two different locales are arguing over possession of his remains, and neither one of them is the place where he said he wanted to be buried in his will.

If you have not read The Glories of Mary, perhaps it's time!  Another great book by Liguori is Preparation for Death, which is right on time for Lent this year! Reading that book put a whole new focus on life for me.  A recurring theme in it is that of final perseverance. He explains that the grace for final perseverance is something that no one can merit in this life, but that we can get pretty close to achieving its merit by supplication, but it takes a lifetime of constancy once you make the decision to pursue this goal.

This ties in with something I read in the Raccolta, where it has indulgences after each prayer.  After the Angele dei prayer (Angel of God, my guardian dear...), it says that by praying this prayer DAILY for the rest of you life you can merit (provided you meet the standard prerequisites) a plenary indulgence at the moment of death. But there are fine points to be aware of, such as the necessity to relinquish all attachment to sin before you can be eligible for any plenary indulgence.

    Dear Neal,

At the end of the 15th Rosary mystery, we ask for the grace of final perseverance. If a person prays the entire Rosary daily, the person would be asking for this grace every day.

    Jesus and Mary,
    David

I've been reading Fr. Martin von Cochem's Die heilige Messe fur die Weltleute (TAN 1997 reprint in English is re-titled The Incredible Catholic Mass, 453pp. paperback, 10 copies $5 ea.). It was written in 1702 which is 74 years before America was born.

Neil, I have a book by this same priest: The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass Explained, printed privately ($8 PER BOOK or $25 BOX of 10) http://www.bacaustralia.com.au/home/bac-australia-publishing/  (312 pages and re-Englished by Fr Paul Power MSC). Mine is dated 18th October, 1996. I'm sure you could never find this book in a Catholic bookshop (of the new order), although I know that the person responsible for this printing is not an adherent of tradition. Nevertheless he does amazing things for the good of mankind for the love of God.  I must get this book out and read it. Thanks for the reminder.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

    Dear Nadir,

Apparently your book is the same one under a different title:
Quote from: Nelson, Publisher's Preface, p.viii

By far the most popular of his works, and universally acknowledged as the best, is the present book on the Mass, titled in its original English edition, Cochem's Explanation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and often simply called An Explanation of the Mass. (Also well known to English readers is the author's book, The Four Last Things -- Death, Judgment, Hell, Heaven, TAN, 1987, which has been instrumental in the conversion of many people.)

Your edition won't have that Preface in it, obviously, but you probably can find the quoted pages from above in Chapter 1, THE NATURE OF HOLY MASS, in the section beginning on my page 10: THE ATTACKS MADE BY HERETICS UPON THE HOLY SACRIFICE OF THE MASS.

Your 312 pages could easily be less than my 453 pages due to a larger format. My paperback is 4-1/2 x 7 and if yours is larger, it can have more text on each page.

The part I copied above begins in the second paragraph, "At the commencement of the twelfth century, the impious Albigenses appeared in France; ..."

The first paragraph of this section highlights the fact of the heresy of Berengarius of Tours as "the first who presumed to speak and write against the Holy Mass," after the first 10 centuries of the Christian Church during which "teachers of heresy were indeed not wanting, but none of them ventured to assail the Mass; much less did they attempt to do away with it."

Fr. Cochem somehow skips over the historical fact that the Elevation of the Host and the Chalice had not been a rubric of the Roman Rite until after the refutation of Barengarius in the 11th century. It was introduced following the Council of Rome, 1079, when the Berengarius heresy was condemned, and it's an excellent example of "organic development of the Mass" since these two elevations were inserted into the universal Roman rubrics to seal the subject by showing the newly consecrated Blessed Sacrament to all present. It is also a good example of "Rome has spoken, the subject is closed" or Roma locuta, causa finita est.

We can well remember this every time we see the priest raise the Host and/or the Chalice at Holy Mass.

Similarly, we can observe the break at Vatican II at the genuflection of the priest immediately after speaking the form of each consecration (first the Host, then the Chalice). He genuflects, AND the altar bells are rung.  For with the changes of Newmass, the priest no longer genuflects before raising the species, and no bells are rung.  (They got rid of the bells entirely.)  While Vatican II parades the excuse of "organic development" it is only talk, and not reality, because what they actually did was not organic at all but an accommodation toward the Protestants, which is a destruction of the Mass.  Recall, above, for the first 10 centuries there was no destruction of the Mass, but only development.

Someone needs to go through this fine book with a score sheet keeping track of all the numerous ways that the Newmass departs in a malevolent way from Sacred Tradition in the Latin Mass.

    St. Alphonsus Liguori
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.
