  • It looks like modern art to me.  Contemporary art is mostly
    modern art.

I am reminded of an art show I attended, and all the art that won
prizes were the artwork that took not much talent. The real artwork
by talented artists were ignored. And, this was in the 1960's.

  • Modern art is generally abstract and corrupts natural forms. Not so with this art, which is refreshingly orthodox.

That is your opinion, and I do no share it.

The artists that painted these pictures do not have real talent.
Religious art always demands the most talented because real
religious art draws people to God, and a Holy Life.

Do we have to go back to the middle ages for real religious art.
    It can be done today.

  • To RC1953:

My comment was about its welcome orthodoxy, not its genius.

In fact true religious art in the first place, requires piety in the artist:

    Jeremiah 10:14

"Every man is become a fool for knowledge, every artist is confounded in his graven idol: for what he hath cast is false, and there is no spirit in them."

    Wisdom 7:15-16

And God hath given to me to speak as I would, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given me: because he is the guide of wisdom, and the director of the wise: For in his hand are both we, and our words, and all wisdom, and the knowledge and skill of works.

Natural talent is good, but it is finished by the Holy Ghost.

Religious art does not have to be founded on rare genius to move people to God.

  • Not really my taste, but aesthetically pleasing and reverent.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • I agree Elizabeth!

Too much intellectual/cultural pride these days, masks that innocence, simplicity and littleness express Godliness more than technical genius.

    Matthew 18:3

"And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

    2 Corinthians 11:3

"But I fear lest, as the serpent seduced Eve by his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted, and fall from the simplicity that is in Christ."

    2 Corinthians 9:11

"That being enriched in all things, you may abound unto all simplicity, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God."

For me, the following tells more of what God our Father is truly like than (with no disrespect) Michaelangelo's painting in the Sistine Chapel.

  • I too prefer the more humiliating (and therefore funny) image of the devil!

I'm always amazed to think of how comparatively simple is God's image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Tilma of Guadelupe.  From the images I've seen of it, there's no hint that it was miraculously created.  God could have made it visually extraordinary in some way, but He chose to have it look almost like any young artist might have painted it.

This is one of my favorite images:

It's the parable of the vineyard where 'the first shall be last, and the last, first'.  I like the look on the face of one of the envious 'firsters', and the benevolent look on the Owner's Face.

Another thing I find amazing is this:

It looks so stiff - almost like a mannequin.  But it's a miraculous statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - the instrument of countless miracles.  Nothing special technically, but even without the miraculous aspect, it looks so chaste and innocent.
What return shall I make to the Lord for all the things that He hath given unto me?
