  • I'm thinking of posting pictures here of when I was in Italy on a pilgrimage almost two years ago.

Here's one from when I was in Assisi. I was in the edifice of the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Angeli (Holy Mary of the Angels), which contains the Portiuncula, where St. Francis founded his order, and the place where he died. What was nice was that there was Benediction there at the time.   It was not nice though that a NOM was being said. The picture below is of the thistle plant on which St. Francis did penance to gain the virtue of chastity. It is on the grounds of the basilica.

    <a href="http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h34/petruspaulus/?action=view&current=DSCF0106.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h34/petruspaulus/DSCF0106.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Sadly, we weren't allowed to take pictures of the inside of the basilica. The church of the Portiuncula was pretty small I tell you. Just imagine what it would have been like to have had Mass there.

  • Sorry the picture didn't come up the first time. Here it is:

  • This was when I was in Nursia. It is the place where both St. Benedict and St. Scholastica were born. St. Scholastica's feast day was this month, and St. Benedict's will be this next very soon approaching month.

  • Very nice, Kepha. Have any more?

Next time you'll have to take us all with you.  :smirk: I'd love to see more of Europe--especially places of religious significance. I've only been to Ireland, though.

You're half Italian, right? Do you know anything about your European background?
I'm mostly German (family from Michelsrombach), but my family has been in TX since 1860.

  • Oh, yes, there are more pictures I'd like to post soon.

I'm actually only a quarter Italian, but it is a substantial amount. :laugh1: I know my Italian ancestors on my great grandfather's side came from the northern region of Piemonte. St. John Bosco, as a matter of fact, lived in that same region. St. Anselm of Canterbury was also from there. I wonder though if any of my ancestors ever go to meet or even be under the spiritual care of St. John Bosco. Who knows? My great grandmother's side came from in or around Bologna though. I never got to see Piemonte. I was in Bologna for a little bit, but we were only making a short stop there and didn't even set foot off the bus. :laugh1:

There other European ancestries I would have are Spanish, Irish, Dutch, and English. I don't what regions they all came from though.

You "bump" a thread when you want it back up at the top of the forum so everyone will see it again.

It would have been less obvious if Kepha would have posted something like, "So, anyone else been to Rome?" But, it's more honest if you just post BUMP.

Of course, you run the risk of annoying the moderator...

  • This the largest painting in the world. It is inside the cathedral dome of Santa Maria del Fiore (Holy Mary of the Flower) in Florence, Italy.

  • That Basilica looks amazing from the outside, but I'm afraid to ask how horribly they've wreckovated the interior.
