I have been to Poland many times, and as any regular readers know, my son's extended family lives there, and his mother was raised there. So I like to think I know a little about the place from a "boots on the ground" perspective.
The Church in Poland is...
weird. That's the first word that comes to mind. It's not traditional. But neither is it full-bore Novus Ordo. I don't quite know
how you'd describe it. The phrase that keeps coming to mind is
"Vatican II for white people".Poles are typically somewhat reserved, fairly unemotional people, not the most cheerful nationality in the world. In other words, they're not little melanated Global South pepper pots hopping around in joyous processions with everyone animated as though they've eaten too much sugar. IOW, they're not Filipinos. Polar opposites, no pun intended. They are soft-spoken, undemonstrative, and tend to be on the quiet side. It is as though there is a subliminal message of "we are what we are, and there's not a damn thing we can do about it, take it or leave it".
Somehow, this church in Nowa Huta just looks and feels like it couldn't be anywhere else in the world but Poland.
