Title: New Catholic Science-Fiction Novel
Post by: Bravado on September 01, 2017, 07:35:16 PM
Hey all,

Just dropping a link here if anyone enjoys sci-fi. I finished writing this a few months ago and the feedback has been good. It's a Catholic work by a Catholic author--one more push for a culture that we can't let die!

https://www.amazon.com/Razorback-Premonition-M-C-Zepf/dp/0991856457

The book is called Razorback: Premonition and is available as a Kindle or paperback.

Back cover blurb:

"Albert Malleus was the greatest captain in Fleet history--before his disgrace. Now, a decade later, he is given a chance at redemption: he is to captain the Fellowship, a mining scow turned transport, as part of the greatest evacuation convoy in history. The convoy's destination is Vernovum, a paradise that promises new beginnings for the remnants of the human race.

"At odds with his ship and crew, Malleus's ruthless style of command quickly alienates allies and emboldens enemies. Beset with mutiny, malfunction, and his own indifference, Malleus's tenure aboard the Fellowship promises to be short. With the situation collapsing into chaos, Malleus must find a way to save the Fellowship, protect the convoy, and complete the mission. That is, if he still believes in the promise of Vernovum."

Thanks for your interest and God speed.

This isn't like "Christian Rock" is it? Cuz, I gotta tell you, daaaaaaaaang....
Fiction is tough though. I used to write. Couldn't reconcile it with my conversion. Better "dude" than me if the author can swing that one.

No way! This is the real thing--the science-fiction is mostly hard (i.e. scientific) in a universe that is Catholic.
The story is also an allegory, and if I can drop a hint here, Fellowship is a word to represent the Church and thus a symbol for the "vehicle of salvation" that is headed towards Vernovum -- Latin for "The New Springtime"/Vatican II -- captained by a man named Albert ("Alb" being a priestly garment, thus priest and Christ figure and white being a symbol of goodness) Malleus (containing the Latin words for "Evil" and "Hammer", representing the stubborn will of man and the conflict introduced by original sin).
It took me five years, but I promise you a story that can stand on its own, an unabashed Catholic universe, and symbolism that tells a story of its own, if the reader is into that sort of decoding thing.

Vatican "2" ain't my bag, but thanks for the reply.

Take care.
Nor mine. That's why the book is an allegory: a ship bound for a promise that does not exist. It is an allegory for the crisis of the Church cause by this empty pursuit.

Now that changes things a bit. I hope that you found a way to blurb that without making it a giveaway. (thematics-wise I mean.)

I wasn't kidding about writing fiction post conversion. I tend to scruple anyway; I've scruples on crack when trying to write fiction, which is too bad for it was one of the few things that I enjoyed.

Good on you for making it work.

Well don't give up writing DZ, you never know what will come of a work set aside for a bit and then revisited.  It doesn't have to be brilliant, just readable with a storyline that moves the reader along.

Too kind. Those weren't the problem. Writing something that isn't wrong is. Besides, while I don't consider him a priest, a "priest" who is otherwise well trained in this area told me not to. Conciliar or no, that doesn't mean that I have warrant to disregard this individual.

Thank you though. It is what it is.

I admit, I am not a scrupulous individual, but I can only encourage you to try your hand at some sort of writing--Catholic culture is in full retreat and new works are sparse. We need people of this generation bringing forth new stories that celebrate, explore and defend all the values that are important to us as a people of the true Faith.
If you permit yourself to read fiction, I'd love some feedback from someone with a sharper edge than my own--the Kindle, if you have one, copy will only set you back a few dollars. But really, perhaps it was a question of timing when you were told to avoid writing--you may be able to approach it differently now. We need Catholic artists so desperately--people are not converted by philosophy books, but by the media and stories they encounter. We need to make those stories happen.
I'm not trying to heap pressure on you, but encouragement. And thanks for your interest in my project here!

Thanks. Kinda tired, and I've a soul to save under an empty see. Case of an over full plate.

Besides the  last "order" stands, even from a fake though well meaning priest, with none to countermand.

I don't think that you'd find my feedback useful. As I said, I find most fiction to be irreconcilable with either Moral Theology or Moral Philosophy. "May be" or "probably" acceptable, again and esp. under an empty chair, potentially influencing countless souls, is unsat.

The "full retreat" would be checked in large part when the emperor and his mockingbird cardinals is admitted to be jay bird naked, instead of aided and abetted by people who seem to think that a sacristy is an opium den.

I do  get that fiction can be a very effective, and so dangerous, means to permeate the otherwise impermeable.

This should be a good indicator of why you really don't want my input, but it's kind of you to ask.

out.

I know it's just a forum, but the ghoulish grammar and pestilent punctuation is bad enough.
