Title: Need Help With Chapter Titles for my Book on J.R.R Tolkien
Post by: bilbobaggins on March 03, 2022, 01:36:59 PM
I have two chapter titles for my upcoming book that leave a very sour taste in my mouth. I would like to change them but I need the help of all the worthy folk on this forum who have nothing better to do. I hope that applies to at least a few. So the first chapter title that needs help is this

Attitudes Toward the Environment—the Free Peoples and the Shadow

The chapter is on the differences in how those under the shadow treat and view nature compared to the free peoples.

The next title that needs help is really an assortment of unrelated topics to the rest of the book but ones I wanted to include. Subjects such as Tolkien's view on allegory, his views on tradition, similarities that trees have to Tolkien's ents, and thoughts on escapism and fantasy in general. I was thinking of connecting the chapter title to the title of the book The Road Goes Ever on and on, But it does not have to be. I have some ideas below but the final does not need to resemble below at all.

Hee hee. Everyone here always has SOMETHING to do. As St.Paul says, pray unceasingly. ;) Having said that, I will throw my churchwarden into The Ring to make what I trust shall be useful comments.

The Natural World: Free Peoples vs Mordor (Orcs take such delight in trampling; good trees being felled by Saruman for the fires of Orthanc....I assume these are being covered in your chapter, amongst others.)

There and Back Again: From the Shire to Mordor and the Return of the Hobbits

The Long and Winding Road to Mordor  ( Ok maybe too close to an LOTR meets The Beatles, but this post is a brain-sturm und drang session :cowboy: )

Looking forward to your finished work, or whatever you would like to share before that.

The Shadow is Sauron and Mordor - the Free Peoples are Elves Men and Dwarves.

Anyone who displays Robert E Lee and has familiarity with Tolkien is honored more than a brother. Thank you for taking the time.

Nature, natural world, these do seem to fit better. Not just Mordor, not just orcs, but the whole history of vile creatures is covered.

There and Back Again must be included in some manner. I don't think it will fit chapters but perhaps a section title can be spruced up by your suggestion.

Most kind. :cowboy:

Yes, when speaking of evil, it goes right back to Melkor then Morgoth, Angband, Utumno. And things in the Second Age that are more foul than Orcs.
Your chapter titles will come to you I am sure the more you ponder on them, maybe whilst enjoying Old Toby and a strong tea. ;)

Not sure about Old Toby but strong tea is to my liking. In fact that is the best suggestion you have had.
