  • I don't mean to be a contrarian here, but I do think that the Pre-VatII moral theology manuals, while not bad, missed it by not emphasizing the virtues like St. Thomas did. I know that the modernists have picked this line of thinking up an run with it, but the Dominicans had long had this critique, which is why I prefer their manuals.

    True.  Catholic liberalism dates to the time of the Enlightenment, back in the 18th-century, which is when Popes began condemning it.  IMHO, the ideas of Catholic liberalism which gave rise to Catholic modernism are not necessarily "bad," rather, they are not (in my opinion at least) Catholic.  They are attempt to "merge" Catholic theology with humanistic, even atheistic materialistic, ideas.
