  • MathInfo: A Parody

As a prospective teacher, I am always interested in learning new things, new angles and ideas that could improve my abilities and increase my potential.

Since I am against the new form of Math, I searched for sites with information on more traditional methods. I found a forum called MathInfo. It appeared promising. I signed up immediately, and hoped that I could get new ideas and information from those who resisted the new Math as much as I did.

At first, everything seemed fine. Friendly forum members answered a few of my questions, and I found a few sites for useful, teaching materials. Eventually, I visited more of the forum, and found things that didn't quite add up. Even though the site's explicit function is listed as the “de-facto discussion headquarters for traditional Math”, a few users offer too much conjecture, too many axioms, and not enough absolute value.

There are a few factors which contribute to this unfortunate model. Some people focus too much on the human equation, and other, unimportant variables. They have lost the function of the forum, to educate, illustrate and inform, based on something higher than the lowest common denominator.

I had hoped for a more comprehensive site, one with nontrivial information, to help me in my resistance against the new Math. That was the expected value. Although the forum offers some of that, the negative direction promoted by a few radical outliers threatens to undermine the formula on which the site is based.

  • Don't quit your day job.

All I would add is, that you're not going to find "ideal" or "perfect" anything if human beings are involved.

It was a quick writing session, about fifteen minutes, and a rough draft. It is far from perfect, and not my best writing. My day job keeps me very busy, and I have written little in the last few months.

Did you catch all the math lingo?

  • Just to be clear, this was meant to be a humorous post, not meant to be taken seriously. I thought it would be interesting to encapsulate some of the complaints about Cathinfo and put them into a story, using mathematical references. One of the nicknames I have heard for Cathinfo is Mathinfo. It was fun to write, and I hoped it would be somewhat amusing to read.

  • Perhaps MathAnswers or MathEathers would be more to his liking.

  • Hey Manuel, remember that time on MathInfo when you came in with Pfeiffer's functional equation of x(fake photos) + y(fake docuмents) = 1 Bishop Ambrose? Those were the days!
