MathInfo: A Parody
As a prospective teacher, I am always interested in learning new things, new angles and ideas that could improve my abilities and increase my potential.
Since I am against the new form of Math, I searched for sites with information on more traditional methods. I found a forum called MathInfo. It appeared promising. I signed up immediately, and hoped that I could get new ideas and information from those who resisted the new Math as much as I did.
At first, everything seemed fine. Friendly forum members answered a few of my questions, and I found a few sites for useful, teaching materials. Eventually, I visited more of the forum, and found things that didn't quite add up. Even though the site's explicit function is listed as the “de-facto discussion headquarters for traditional Math”, a few users offer too much conjecture, too many axioms, and not enough absolute value.
There are a few factors which contribute to this unfortunate model. Some people focus too much on the human equation, and other, unimportant variables. They have lost the function of the forum, to educate, illustrate and inform, based on something higher than the lowest common denominator.
I had hoped for a more comprehensive site, one with nontrivial information, to help me in my resistance against the new Math. That was the expected value. Although the forum offers some of that, the negative direction promoted by a few radical outliers threatens to undermine the formula on which the site is based.
