Actually, I have churchwarden pipes lining the walls of my Great Hall! As for the One Ring... welllll... I'm working on it, but Bilbo is being very mysterious as to where he is hiding it. Any ideas?

    Good man....errrrr dwarf!

I figure Old Toby has to be a traditional English blend tobacco. Latakia blend with a touch of Perique.....warms the heart of an old wizard. :gandalf:

I do have a sterling silver One Ring given as a gift. Mithral silver is of course more valuable than gold....in Middle Earth anyway!

  • Did anyone else hear about how for part two of "The Hobbit" they will be having a girl elf warrior because there are no women in "The Hobbit"?  I was at the toy store the other night with my mom and they have "The Hobbit" action figures and she was one of them.  I don't know what her name is but I cannot believe how they are ruining the story with her just to make the feminists happy!

When did boys want to start playing with female action figures?

From the actress who plays the lady elf warrior:

“She is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard. She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly.”

If you'll excuse me, I think I need to  :barf:

They don't.  But in our relentless drive to make our society androgynous it is essential to have little girls play the same as little boys.

  • If J.R.R. Tolkien could hear this, he would roll over in his grave.  I would have been tolerant of it had she been given just a bow and arrow and still made to act like a lady, but no Hollywood has to make her just like the men.  In Narnia Susan has a bow and arrow and even though I don't think she should be fighting atleast it's more of a feminine weapon, she acts like a lady, and she wears those beautiful dresses even into battle.

  • THIS is one the reasons I stay away from anything produced by 99.9 % of movie makers. Remember that what is on screen in Jackson's Hobbit, not Tolkien's.

There ARE truly powerful female character in Tolkien that again the films flubbed.

I would esp Varda, whom the Elves call Elbereth Gilthoniel, the Star Queen of old, the closest thing Middle Earth has to The Blessed Virgin and Mother Mary.

In the Chronicles of Narnia, esp LWW, Aslan specifically tells Lucy and Susan they are NOT meant to go into battle. Strictly a rearguard and defensive position at best.

  • Another thing Gollum might say concerning the new Hobbit films: "Spoiling nice novel, scorching it!"
"In our time more than ever before, the greatest asset of the evil-disposed is the cowardice and weakness of good men, and all the vigour of Satan's reign is due to the easy-going weakness of Catholics." -St. Pius X

  • "What would Gollum Say?" would make for an interesting thread, and bumpersticker.

Smeagol's reaction when he tries a piece of Lembas is my contribution.

    "Ashhhhhhessssssss"

I started this list a while back but I dont think I posted it in many places.
Some musical references might be obscure to you younger Dunendain, hobbits, dwarves, and elvenfolk, but forgive me I am older than I appear to come across. :geezer:

Songs LOTR + Hobbit characters would sing.....

    Smeagol :"Preciooooussssss Memories"

Sauron: "Does my Ring hurt your finger?"

Smeagol: "I fell into a burning ring of fire"

Frodo and Sam :"Long and Winding Road and Two of Us/On our way back home"

Galadriel: "This elvish ring does not shine for my anymore"

Balin and co: "Working in the dwarf mine, going down down"

    Gandalf "Lean on me"

Sauron :" That old black magic"

and I am sure y'all can think of many many more!

  • I wonder who marked me down for the Gollum post. Does that person like the new Hobbit films, to the point of having a female elf be a warrior?

  • Hail Thorin.

I have read it many times, listened to it many times, studied it, and taught it.

Surely Beethoven symphonies are part of the music of the Ainur. :-) As are a few other composers.

Melkor reminds me of modern day composers and the love of dissonance.
