Thank you, Mark. I have been finding Papal Encyclicals, Councils, etc, that I can study. Also the Profession of Faith by Urban VIII.
I just now dawns on me that, as the perfidity of the muslim seems directly to hate the Father, and the perfidity of the Jєω to hate the Father and the Son together, so the perfidity of the schismatic seems directly to hate the Person of the Holy Ghost - yet with a most guileful and false "devotion" to Him.
Of course we know that schism is a crime against unity and charity, the special province of the Holy Ghost.
All of these infidelities in one way or another deny the Reality and/or the Essence of the Most Holy Trinity.
It is common for true Catholics to affirm that they do not worship the same "god" as the muslims and the Jєωs. They deny the True God, and His Revelation of Himself; thus their god is the devil (Psalm 95).
Nevertheless, I think that most Catholics - and up until this very moment myself included - believe that the eastern schismatics worship the same Most Holy Trinity, the same "Holy Ghost" as do the Catholics.
I've been doing an awful lot of reading lately on eastern spirituality, including some Orthodox writers. I am finding that when I read the desert fathers, and Catholic commentary on them, the Holy Ghost is properly denoted, and my prayer life improves. Conversely when I read the Orthodox stuff, I sense the presence of something foreign, something strange, something alien and insubstantial, to put a term to it.
I find that the schismatics have a real aversion to precisely defined and demonstrated doctrine, especially scholastic demonstration. They ridicule it and insinuate that reliance on precision will lead the soul away from holiness and interior purification.
It now occurs to me that if they believe heresy about the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity, then they do not worship Him at all, but rather another spirit. When they call upon the "holy spirit,' not in truth, but in lying and falsity, they literally ask the devil to come into their hearts.
They are preaching a false spirituality - which always reminds me of the paganism of the east - promising their adherents "healing," a "spiritual eye," and other weird things that a properly trained Catholic "alerts" and "alarms" on. The schismatics explicitly claim to have a real union with the Divine Spirit, and imply that the Latin Church has not the "Holy Spirit," but rather a "cult of Reason." As Pope Pius IX stated in Quartus Supra, "It has always been the custom of heretics and schismatics to call themselves Catholics and to proclaim their many excellences in order to lead peoples and princes into error."
Indeed, the schismatics do proclaim their devotion to the "Holy Ghost" and their spirituality to be "excellence," compared to Catholic "rationalism." What a duplicity!
Oh the seductiveness of their perversity! They have the Sacraments! They have an ancient Liturgy! They claim to be the true repositories of desert spiritually. How tempting it is to get out of the barren and thirsty wilderness created by Vatican II, and surround oneself with icons and candles!!
Thank God for the scholastic underpinning of the Divine Truths! Inoculation for the mind!! Thank God that He purified my intellect before He ever came near my heart! Where would I be had He let me stew in my emotions this thirty years!
I've never met a heretic that appreciated, venerated, and respected St. Thomas Aquinas, my beloved Teacher.
Eastern spirituality? yes, please God.
Orthodox "spirituality?" a resounding no to a pile of stinking bullshit. Amen.
