  • Does anyone know of literature guides written from a truly Catholic perspective?  I'm think of something which would be an "Intro to Western Literature" type of guide, not necessarily book specific although that would be good too.

  • One of the problems with literature in English is that most famous English writers were not Catholic. Chaucer was Catholic and some claim that Shakespeare was Catholic but most English writers were not.

I guess you could read translations of books in other languages that were written by Catholics.

  • That's why I'd like a guide written from a truly Catholic perspective.  I want a guide to reading the likes of Hardy, Dickens, Hawthorne, Melville from a Catholic point of view.

  • Not exactly what you're looking for, but you might find something useful in the highschool portion of this book.

    A Landscape with Dragons

It's on my wish list, but I don't own it, so can't really comment.

    The Henty Books

Henty takes Protestant side in some of his books.

  • I think that Ignatius Press has some lit guides, but I don't know for which books or if they are any good.

Henty's later books are typically the ones which show an anti-Catholic bias.

That's the type of thing I'm looking for but I wonder how much modernism has seeped into publications from Ignatius Press.  They are not very expensive so I may order one to find out.  Thanks.
