Josquin was the greatest composer of the high Renaissance, the most varied in invention and the most profound in expression.

Thank you for the link, which also leads to a page of his works!
It was perfect background music as I read the kind posting of Hobbledehoy: Advent Breviary Meditations / First Tuesday in Advent.

I treasure so many of you on this forum.

  • An appreciative ear only, my friend.  No extensive knowledge nor study, but I know sublime when I hear it!
May I encourage you to continue to post information that would help those like me? (eager but ignorant)
    Thank you again.

  • I am glad all of you liked the motet. Here's another piece by Josquin Desprez: . It was a chanson composed when the well-renowned composer Johannes Ockeghem died. It would have been then composed about 1497. It is called Nymphes des bois or Le Déploration de Johannes Ockeghem. If not a chanson, it is a lament. Also, notice that the piece is sung by Capella Pratensis as how chant and polyphony would have been sung during that time with the schola all singing the musical notation set up on a big lectern.

  • Josquin's motet "Mente Tota" from the cycle "Vultum Tuum"

    Text:
    Mente tota tibi supplicamus,
ut sicut Filio tuo Domino nostro
    Jesu Christo aliquando displicuimus,
    modo viceversa immutatis moribus
per te usque in finem ei complaceamus.
    Preces nostras, virgo mirabilis,
ideo ne despicias quia ore indigno
    nomen sanctum tuum invocare praesumimus.
    Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis.
Sancta Dei genetrix, ora pro nobis.
Sancta virgo virginum, intercede pro nobis.

With our whole mind we beg you,
that, as your Son our Lord
Jesus Christ we have sometimes displeased,
in the opposite manner and with unchanging habits
may we through you be pleasing to him for ever.
    Accordingly, wondrous virgin,
do not despise our prayers because with unworthy mouth
we presume to call upon your holy name.
    Holy Mary, pray for us.
Holy mother of God, pray for us.
Holy virgin of virgins, intercede for us.
