  • A violin, so she can play while her husband complains.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • To teach music when it's time to homeschool the children.

When it comes to music, some people are "take it or leave it"; others can't live without it.

I am from the latter category.

Nemo dat quod non habet. No one gives what he doesn't have.

You can't teach your children to love music if you don't love it yourself. I will never teach my children to play any instruments, because I don't know how to play any myself.

On the other hand, I will teach my children to like singing whether I want to or not -- because that's "me". Just by observing me they'll assume that singing is important, something everyone does, etc.

  • The piano of course!
They are expensive and cuмbersome but keyboards are not and can be used just as well.

Dulcimers and recorders may be less expensive and they make a beautiful sound. I think they are quite basic and may be simple to self-teach.

We were taught how to read music in Catholic school and the only instrument was the "pitch pipe".
    "Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu".
I don't think anyone can relate. You would of had to have been there. ;-)

Learning music, even if its just theory helps brain development.

  • If they play the piano, they are likely to end up playing lots of depressive Chopin and defiant Beethoven and fantastical Schumann and suicidal Schubert.  Most of the piano literature does not have what I'd call a properly calibrated Catholic ethos.

I have some whacky theories on music, because I listen almost exclusively to French Baroque Catholic music and medieval and Renaissance polyphony ( with a bit of chant ).
But I see the piano as expressing a kind of humanistic spirit, it is usually used to translate fleeting emotions.  But if you listen to polyphony like Palestrina, there is no human emotion, it's all about giving glory to God.  It's not about "Oh, I'm sad today, I think I'll write a sonata so the whole world knows I'm miserable."  I think the devil used music in order to make people enslaved to nostalgia and romantic feelings and morbid sentimentality, etc.

I agree that learning an instrument develops the brain, though, the same goes for foreign languages.  The best instrument for Catholics is the voice, but you can't buy one of those.

These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

You're on to something there. Much music is overly-emotional, and encourages emotion in those who are already inclined to emotion.

Are the Irish famous for being stoic -- or emotional?  And how musical are they? Quite.

The best instrument for Catholics is the voice? Well, that makes me feel better about not having learned to play an instrument!  :laugh1:

I agree about foreign languages being good for the mind. I know (to varying degrees) 3 foreign languages myself -- Latin, Japanese, and I'm currently brushing up on Spanish (due to where I live!)  It's true that if you don't use it, you lose it. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

It's also true that foreign languages should begin early. The Spanish words I learned in grade school I never forgot. I'm so glad we had Spanish class in elementary school.

  • I used to read and sing Gregorian chant in the choir if that's any consolation.

  • Well, I can play this in a very (very) primitive arrangement, which I taught myself.
Yes. Pride is a sin. But so is envy. ;-)
Warning: there is piano music featured.

If you ever wanted to hear the Ave Maria sound like Russian futurist sonatas by the likes of Scriabin, here is your chance  :laugh1:

I hope that isn't you in the video.  If it is I'm only poking some gentle fun.

  • Violin would be my 3rd choice behind piano and guitar. I'd be interested in instruments which accompany others and/or vocals easily. I think of violin as mostly a solo instrument. While this may be just a perception, I'd worry about the availability of music written for violin+____.

Cost is also a factor. I spent 8 years playing the French horn, but don't today partly because I never owned one of my own.

I agree that a basic understanding of music is good for everyone.

  • I would recommend guitar, fiddle, banjo, tin whistle, bodhran drums.

Basically, the instruments needed for good Irish music accompaniment!
