  • I am writing a novel at the minute, and I have hit a bit of a snag...

It is a novel about the political in-fighting in the ancient Roman Republic. Very analogical, as I am sure you will gather.

The Roman Senator Valerius has sent his servant, Robertus beyond the confines of the Roman empire, so as to tell Marcus that he will soon be returned from exile.

One thing that I struggle with as a writer is time progression, and that is why I have never actually finished a novel. I have finished a book - which I hope to soon publish - but not a novel.

How long would it take Robertus to go from Rome to Northern Germany?

  • A man on horseback can cover 20-30 miles a day, depending on the terrain.  Keep your messenger busy with adventures, keep it loose and let your readers figure out the timing if that concerns them.  That's why books are better than movies---we use our own imaginations to "see" the stories.
