  • I've heard good things about the book but I've started to read it and saw that Mark Twain writes people, including St. Joan of Arc believed in fairies, if I remember correctly.

I put the book off because a) Catholics shouldn't read books of heretics on religious issues and b) I couldn't tell how much is fiction and how much reality.

Any thoughts? Anyone read it and have problems to share?

  • I never read it but my husband said it was excellent. He never mentioned anything about fairies.
Mark Twain said that the Joan of Arc book was his greatest accomplishment.

  • I was going to read this book.  I read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court first, however, because of the movie staring Bing Crosby.  It turns out that the movie, while very superficial but whimsical, has almost nothing in common with the book.  Twain's book is an anti-Catholic screed.  I've assumed that his Joan of Arc was probably anti-Catholic as well.

  • a bit of a liberal piece, but it does not show Mark Twain's book on Joan of Arc as anti-Catholic at all. Maybe he had a change of heart in the 12 years it took to research the Saint.

  • Read it about 40 years ago and was very impressed with his treatment of her. Did not find any anti-Catholic sentiments at all. Still have the copy in my library and recommend it to others. I believe I read that his daughter converted to the Faith.

  • I read that Twain said that this was his greatest work. He worked on it for years & even went to France to delve into the archives there. I'd never read it or even heard about it so I got the book & read it as Joan of Arc is one of my favorite saints & Twain a great writer.  This was several years ago.  It's an EXCELLENT book that everyone really should read &     judge for yourself.  Consider your education incomplete until you read it.  :cowboy:   That's how I feel.

Maybe the book has been revised? They are starting to revise old books these days to remove language that might melt snowflakes, and who knows what else.
