Title: Cloud Studies
Post by: shin on July 23, 2021, 07:17:09 PM
I thought I would share some more cloud photos.

'The cloud covered the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled it.'

Exodus 40:32

'The soul has followed Moses and the cloud, both of these serving as guides for those who would advance in virtue; Moses here represents the commandments of the Law; and the cloud that leads the way, its spiritual meaning. The soul has been purified by crossing the Sea; it has removed from itself and destroyed the enemy army. It has tasted of the waters of Marah, that is, of life deprived of all sinful pleasure; and this at first had seemed bitter and unpleasant to the taste but offered a sensation of sweetness to those who accepted the wood. Next it enjoyed the beauty of the palm trees of the gospel and the springs; it filled itself with the living water, that is, the rock. It took within itself the bread of heaven. It overwhelmed the foreign host - a victory due to the extended arms of the Lawgiver, which thus foreshadowed the mystery of the Cross.

Only then can the soul go on to the contemplation of transcendent Being.'

St. Gregory of Nyssa

'Furthermore, while the soul is withdrawn from everything and is turned within, the eye of contemplation is opened and sets itself up a ladder by which it can pass to the contemplation of God. By this contemplation the soul is set on fire for eternal things by the heavenly and divine good things it experiences, and views all the things of time from a distance and as if they were nothing. Hence when we approach God by the way of negation, we first deny him everything that can be experienced by the body, the senses and the imagination, secondly even things experienceable by the intellect, and finally even being itself in so far as it is found in created things. This, so far as the nature of the way is concerned, is the best means of union with God, according to Dionysius. And this is the cloud in which God is said to dwell, which Moses entered, and through this came to the inaccessible light.'

St. Albert the Great

'Prayer must be humble: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Here St. James tells us that God does not listen to the prayers of the proud, but resists them; while, on the other hand, he is always ready to hear the prayers of the humble: The prayer of the man that humbleth himself shall pierce the clouds, . . . and he will not depart till the Most High behold. The prayer of an humble soul at once penetrates the heavens and presents itself before the throne of God, and will not depart thence till God regards it and listens to it. However sinful such a soul may be, God can never despise a heart that repents of its sins, and humbles itself: A contrite and humbled heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.'

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

"For the first time you [lift your heart to God with stirrings of love], you will find only a darkness, and as it were a cloud of unknowing [...] Whatever you do, this darkness and the cloud are between you and your God, and hold you back from seeing him clearly by the light of understanding in your reason and from experiencing him in the sweetness of love in your feelings. [...] And so prepare to remain in this darkness as long as you can, always begging for him you love; for if you are ever to feel or see him...it must always be in this cloud and this darkness."

Even when I take good plane or birds in flight photos, without some clouds it just doesn't quite have the same touch.

Thank you my friend. I had some good finds today, I will process this afternoon. The Lord is gracious. Certainly more success with clouds than with butterflies.. they are just too flighty.

This thread is highly nebulous.

;)

My favorite kind of cloud is cuмulus, which is known colloquially as "mashed potato clouds".

Notice that weather, like the legal world, medicine, and science in general, makes heavy use of Latin. Latin might be a dead language but it would seem to be the 2nd best language to know today, after English. Maybe if you're into travel instead of science, learn Spanish instead. But still --

Here are three from the other day, and several helpings of mashed potatoes from the garden. :laugh1:

Basically 99% of my cloud photos are home grown, taken from the backyard.

'And Moses, entering into the midst of the cloud, went up into the mountain: and he was there forty days, and forty nights.'

Exodus 24:18

'I am brought to nothing: as a wind thou hast taken away my desire: and my prosperity hath passed away like a cloud.'

Job 30:15

Thank you Mark, I will continue a bit then for a time God willing. It's good to hear other folks like the clouds too.

These are all from quite recently. The first one is one of those I keep a special look for, the ones that look like veils or wings. I also look for times when you can see the light coming down through the clouds.

The previous rainbow photo might not show up colors wise properly on all monitors. I don't have a photographer's color corrected monitor and I took that photo without seeing the rainbow, I only saw it afterwards. This happens though rarely, I will find a rainbow, or a plane or a bird later that I could not see or overlooked in the viewfinder. Clouds move swiftly at times and you have to be quick, though no where near as swift as trying to shoot birds which is like hunting quite thrilling at times.

I used to habitually have a larger viewer attached to the top of my camera which helped a lot but these days I try to have a smaller, less conspicuous kit.

Deo gratias et Marie semper Virgini.

Are you using a polarizing filter?
Title: Re: Cloud Studies
Post by: shin on August 25, 2021, 11:51:50 PM
No, I never use one for sky photos. It's only for seeing through water.. but that's so rare I may sell it. I never use filters really, I have one for astro -- but still too much light here. If I ever move again I will take a look at the light pollution map and prioritize those locations. I'd like to do a lot of astrophotography.

I do put the best clear filters on for lens protection that's about it.

I ua=se polarizers to remove glare and reflections. They help not only to see beneath the surface of water, but also to see better through windows. With all the particulates in our atmosphere plus the natural haze, polarizers help reduce the reflections and glare off the sky. All you do is rotate the outer half of the filter until you see the colors intensify. I think you will like the effect.

'And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me. And when they went their way, JESUS began to say to the multitudes of John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments are in Kings houses. But what went you out to see? a Prophet? Yea, I tell you and more than a Prophet. For this is he whom it is written, "Behold I sent mine angel before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee."'

Matthew 11:6-10

'But our Lord answering Job out of a whirlwind, said: Who is this that wrappeth in sentences with unskillful words? Gird thy loins as a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me if thou hast understanding. Who set the measures thereof, if thou know: or who stretched out the line upon it? Upon what are the foundations thereof grounded? or who laid down the corner stone thereof, when the morning stars praised me together, and all the sons of God made jubilation? Who shut in the sea with doors when it brake forth, proceeding as it were out of a matrice. When I made a cloud the garment thereof, and wrapped it in darkness as in clouts of infancy. I compassed it with my bounds, and put bar and doors. And I said, Hitherto thou shalt come, and shalt not proceed farther, and here thou shalt break thy swelling waves. Didst thou after thy birth command the morning, and shew the dawning his place?'

You're welcome my friend.

It's a rare pleasure finding people who appreciate looking at the heavens.

The first image from the 8th is a special one.

Everyone sees different things in clouds. I actually rarely look for more than the aesthetic beauty of the clouds, but sometimes I find more than hidden planes or birds or rainbows.
