  • It's not November for the poor souls in Purgatory, but it is almost Lent. This song is about miners in bygone times who died in sulfur mines and not given proper burials because of the superstitious association with brimstone.

This simple acoustic version is truer to history than the fast cheery popular modern version. The clip is public so if a popup box appears after clicking on the link, just close that box to play it.

Here are the lyrics in English.

I saw a skull in the corner of a mine shaft.
I was curious and wanted to ask.
    He replied with great sorrow,
I died without tolling of bells.

Went away, my years went away,
they went away, I don't where.
Now I reach eighty years here,
I call for life and death answers me.

Prepare, prepare this bed for me,
because by worms I am eaten all.
If I don't expiate here my sin
I'll expiate in that life with broken blood.

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. He who has God finds he lacks nothing; God alone suffices. - St. Teresa of Jesus
