Title: Book recommendation for new d-in-law who lost her Faith in Catholic Univers
Post by: Cera on December 18, 2016, 04:32:18 PM
I am trying to think of a book for my new fallen-away Latina daughter-in-law. She lost her faith through four years of "Catholic" University. She is very proud of her Mexican heritage. I was thinking of something about Our Lady of Guadalupe or the Christeros. Any  ideas? I was also thinking of "The LIfe of Our Lady as seen by the Mystics."

I would recommend History Of The Popes From Close Of Middle Ages by Von Pastor.

All 40 vols are avail at Wikipedia by searching Ludwig Von Pastor

She also might like  Studies In Church History by Fr Parsons( a 6 vol set), W. Walsh's Isabella Of Spain & Philip II( MO is that the latter is the Best history of Reformation.

Secret Societi3es by Nesta Webster would also be valuable.  :detective:

Your daughter-in-law could possibly return to the Holy Faith after reading one or all of the following books:

The Wonder of Guadalupe, by Francis Johnston

Guadalupe, What Her Eyes Say, by Francis Anson

Not Made By Hands, The Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and The Holy Shroud of Turin, by Thomas Sennot

A Handbook On Guadalupe, Edited by Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, Our Lady's Chapel, New Bedford, MA

Our Lady of Guadalupe and The Conquest of Darkness, by Warren H. Carroll

Another series of books, available from Tradition In Action which are excellent:

Our Lady of Good Success, Prophecies For Our Times, by Marian Therese Horvat, PhD

Stories and Miracles of Our Lady of Good Success, by Marian Therese Horvat, PhD

The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana, Volume I, by Fr. Manuel Sousa Pereira

The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana, Volume II, by Fr. Manuel Sousa Pereira

I do understand the predicament you're in, Cera.  I, like you, am attempting to bring my beloved Paraguayan daughter-in-law back to the practice of our Holy Faith.  May Our Good God grant it ....

If she likes history of Mexico and how communism caused blood shed:  Mexican Martyrdom 1926-1835 by Fr. Parsons.  Then:Blood drenched Altars by  Most Rev. Francis Clement Kelley.

Both are from Tan publishers.

All Mary & no Jesus???

This is the kind of thing that gives Prots ammunition.

My guess is that you think the anti-pope Frank is somehow pope of RC Church.

Our Lady was made by God and powers through her are from God.

Roscoe, by posting as you did, you give yourself away.  So, that is where your heart is?!

Letter to a Fallen Away Catholic

http://store.catholicism.org/letter-to-a-fallen-away-catholic.html

"This is the best defense of the Catholic Church that we have ever read! A terrific response to Protestant Fundamentalists, every non-Catholic who claims to follow Christ, and especially all of our relatives, friends and neighbors who have stopped practicing the Catholic Faith. Answers a myriad of salvation questions and challenges the liberal Catholic education and training that most Americans have received. Answers with solid, charitable, easy-to-read logic mixed with clear, strong irrefutable doses of Scriptural truth and teachings from the Popes, Councils and Saints. A powerful help in restoring unity in Christ and His Catholic Church and an extremely useful source for settling religious disputes and difficulties with those we care about."

I just finished The Dove with the Scarlet Collar, The Life of Mother Mary Elias of the the Blessed Sacrament, OCD, by Mother Teresa of Jesus, OCD. Mexican-born in 1879, she lived through the revolution in Mexico, and the terrible persecution of the Church and escaped with her sisters to safety in Cuba, and later to the US where she established four Carmels. You can find it here: http://www.sistersofcarmel.com/catholic-books-carmelite-spirituality.php

Also, what about the movie, For Greater Glory. Interesting website: https://catholicgene.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/mexicos-forgotten-history-the-persecution-of-catholics-and-the-cristero-war/

• Carroll, Warren Hasty. Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Conquest of Darkness (https://angeluspress.org/Our-Lady-Of-Guadalupe-and-the-Conquest-of-Darkness). Front Royal, Va.: Christendom Publications, 1983.

On the Cristiada, give her this DVD:

• O'Toole, Peter, Eva Longoria, Andy Garcia, Peter O'Toole, Eva Longoria, Oscar Isaac, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Pablo Jose Barroso, Michael Love, and Dean Wright. 2012. For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1566501/). [United States]: Anderson Merchandisers.

It contains many scenes of traditional Catholic Masses.

And if she wants more detail, this book:

• Parsons, Wilfrid. Mexican Martyrdom: Firsthand Accounts of the Religious Persecution in Mexico, 1926-1935 (https://isidore.co/calibre/browse/book/5894). Tan Books, 2012. (originally published: 1936).

Have her over for dinner and a Catholic family movie night.  A good way for family time and Catholic education and correction.

Thank you for all of your wonderful and helpful responses. (I was ill and not able to be here for a while.) Movie night with For Greater Glory and then a follow-up book about Our Lady of Guadalupe.
