Any other Recorder players out there?

  • I play the soprano and tenor and although I have an alto I haven't learned to play it yet.

I'm looking for new music suggestions, specifically not but exclusively Catholic, as I'm bored with my current library.  I know there are websites with loads of free music but I find it frustrating paging through them.

    Any suggestions?

  • Solo repertoire?

There's plenty of baroque and classical music out there for the transverse flute that can be played on the recorder. I like to play G.P. Telemann's Fantasias, and J.S. Bach's Partita in A Minor for solo flute.

You might look into getting yourself a large book of "popular classics" that includes well-known romantic and classical themes from things like Swan Lake, Symphony of the New World, Peer Gynt, and the like. If it's written for piano, and you have a partner or two, you can easily arrange it to your taste.

If you've never heard of Michael Praetorius, you should acquire a collection or two of his music. A Renaissance master. He wrote many lively and short dances, but also many beautiful religious pieces.

I'll see if I can't give some more suggestions later. Do you have preferences of style, period, arrangement?

  • Here is the well-known Frans Brueggen playing one of Telemann's fantasias.

  • I'm not sure what I like anymore,  I think I'm just in a "fidgety" mood right now   I'm not a proficient on the recorder, or music in general, so I do know I need shorter pieces to work on.  And yes,  I do just play for myself.

  • I'm saving up for an oboe or clarinet, but "Kojo No Tsuki" would be a good melody for a recorder. I'm so dumb until now, I would've called a recorder a flute.

Thanks, I found a version to download.  I also found a youtube video of a woman playing it on the flute.  Haunting melody.

Popular classics and Praetorius are generally not difficult and fun to play.
