  • In an unincorporated town.  My great great grandfather and some of his children are buried there.

  • A "little" church?  I wasn't expecting to see a cathedral. Beautiful and glorious. I'd love to see the inside.  Thanks for sharing a bit of our Catholic history from America's heartland.

Yes, the inside is glorious.  More impressive than the outside. It's not a large church.  The town has never had more than a few hundred people.  It's 8 miles from my grandmother's house.

She goes to the Basilica in her town, which is also nice.

  • Here's a picture I took several years ago when the sun just happened to be right behind the steeple.  I regret cutting off the top though.  It would be much better if I hadn't done that.

  • That Gothic style Church sure stands out. To bad that there
    are no interior photos.
Reminds me of old St James in Redondo Beach,Ca.,  that
was replaced with a more modern structure in 1957.

It was locked that day we went there.

EWTN did a show on on the churches in the vicinity of Dyersville, IA.  Maybe I can upload the video.

  • This one is eight miles away from the one on top.  It was my mother's parish when she was a girl:

  • Looks like they put the church on the cover of this week's Wanderer.

Maybe because they read these forums?

My wife and I were confirmed and sacramentally married there.  A weekly Tridentine Mass is held there at noon on Sundays.

It's a Basilica, not a Cathedral.  The Cathedral is in Dubuque, just to the east, right across from the River (Mississippi) and the Dubuque Casinos.

They have had a problem with Protestants going in and leaving Jack Chick pamphlets in the pews.  They have a daily NO Mass (including, Saturday mornings.)  If you need in sometime, just knock on the Rectory next to the church.  At midnight the bells in the tower should ring.  They got new kneeling pads several years ago, so things should be in good shape, although, they have had financial problems over the past 10 years.

If you go the children's part of the cemetery there is a tombstone with three of my great great grandfather's children who died on the same day.  The children of Joseph Gebhard.
