The Catholic Church was strongly against the amendment, but stated that Catholics could vote for the amendment in good conscience, and that it would not be a sin to do so.[2]

are they right? it would be voting for civil divorce... but... i don't know. i want to know in case something like this ever happens in the US.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • Holy Mother Church permits divorce.  We are just not permitted to marry again.  Nowadays, everyone is paying for annulments and then "marrying" again. This is adultery.

I'm guessing this is the Irish divorce referendum. Or maybe the Maltese one. Which given how both were very close (9000 roughly in Ireland and 15,000 in Malta) a papal decleration that voting in favour was not sinful could have swung the balance in favour of divorce.

  • The law of God is that Marriage is forever, till death do us part.
There is no such thing then as 'divorce' in Catholic law.
The law of the State however has 'divorce' in that the state will recognise the legal ending of marriage.
For Catholics however, you cannot separate the two. Any Catholic, who votes for something that inevitably leads to sin (in this case adultery) will have to take some responsibility in these sins. The same applies to abortion or any other state law that accommodates sin against God.
It is then 'a sin' to vote for divorce.
