Working Out, Going to the Gym

  • So before I converted about 1 year ago I would go 5 times a week to the gym and workout but when I converted I found it better for my conscience to stop going to advoid sin since as I was in nice shape I, like the modern fathless gymgoer there, was full of myself and the greek god style body, its like a gym disease which you start to love and feel atracted to yourself. I thought although I was trying to be an "alpha male" I was being completely efeminate by my lust and pride. At the begining of my gradual conversion I tried to stop this behavior which I mostly suppressed but the probability of sin was always there. So I ask myself after reading some posts here advising to practise regular exercise and workout is this practise moraly good? I think for my likelyhood of sinning is better to not go to the gym at all. Is it really a catholic behavior to go jogging or go blast some iron like the modern man does? I was a little confused when I read some points made about this matter

  • Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. You are a "tenant" in that body. You have a duty to take care of that body.

You also have the duty to avoid self-love and occasions of sin.

In all that you have the facts you need to make a moral decision. :-)

  • If you wish to exercise regularly and keep fit, make sure it is for a noble purpose, not self-centered.

I would like you to come around and clean up my garden as I am unable to cope with it now.

  • Maybe the gym is an occasion of sin, for some, due to the people there?  Get some weights and work out at home then.  Exercise is necessary and good for the body.  Maybe cut back on the exercise (a little) and spend the extra time with spiritual reading or extra prayer?  That way your goal is not to “look good” but to simply “keep in shape”.  Hard to give good advice as your post was too general.

  • I get what you're saying about modern gyms. Definitely an occasion of sin IMO and the temptation to being "swole" is really high because men in general are competitive. I think some exercise is good, but it doesn't have to be obsessive or even at a gym.

I personally no longer go to gyms because of all the immodest women.
