  • Hi all,

This is way random, i'm just wondering if i'm missing something .....

I know someone who lived a sinful life and wanted to return to the faith fairly recently. She phoned up her local traditional oratory to talk to a priest, but none was available. She spoke to the secretary (a man who I know is devout and practising). She said she felt like it was "too late" to come back to God and was worried. She asked him if it was, hoping he would be reasonable and give her some inspiration.

And he pretty much told her it was too late at this point - implying because we were in end times?

Am I missing something - shes not dead yet, Jesus has not returned yet?

Why would someone say that and frighten someone?

Luckily she spoke to a priest, she's now back at mass and confession etc

  • No one is "too late" for the mercy of God and to return to the Faith. Remember the Saints, some of whom walked in those same shoes before becoming holy.

    God bless her richly!

  • Fr. John O'Connor +rip, said in one of his sermons when speaking about the Church's enemies, he said that this is their practice (and it continues to work very well); in order to do the most damage and if you want real authority, "seek the second highest position".

I always think of this whenever the antics of Pablo comes up, and also whenever I hear things along the lines of the OP. While the secretary may not be second in command, he is the first line of contact, the one who screens everything and can spin whatever he wants, however he wants to whomever he wants.

Judging by the OP, the secretary doesn't sound like a devout and practicing Catholic at all. But there's always two sides to every story so you should ask him about this.

  • I was told this EXACT thing by a Protestant minister back in 1993.  I was baptized Catholic but raised without religion.  I was 35 years old, had just fled across the country to escape a man who’d molested me for three years and gotten away with it, and was in a strange city where I knew literally nobody.  This “pastor” heard my story, and upon hearing my age, declared to my face, “You realize your chances of being saved are exceedingly slim to nothing. I can’t help you.”  He got up, and ushered me to the door.
Only the fear of Hell prevented me from committing ѕυιcιdє that week.

Please tell this dear soul that it is never too late unless you’re dead.  I hope the priest was told what the secretary said.  It is no small matter.

Possibly both you and the priest are bad judges of person to think that man is suitable for a position like that? Is it a paid position?
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • Is it not possible that the secretary mis-heard the caller and was saying that it was too late to speak to the priest because he was gone and would not be back for a few days?

  • Sounds like the woman was overwrought and misunderstood. The secretary probably just said it was too late for anything but emergency calls.
