Thank you all. It's a very hard issue, I know.

As for this relentless suffering being a gift, I can't wrap my mind around this. It's much closer to a curse.

Only someone who has experienced what you are experiencing can talk credibly to you about what you are going through.  I suppose then the thing to do is meditate on the Gospels, on the meaning of the Faith, and to confide in Our Lord and in the saints.

    God be with you.

Your suffering is very subjective. I can guarantee you I could find a worse off person from and objective point of view who was happier because they viewed their suffering as deserved or light.

The mother of St. Rafka once told her husband, who began to complain why God was giving them so much suffering in their poverty:

" When our suffering has reached the level of Christ's suffering, then we can  complain"

And in truth, we all deserve to suffer because we all have sinned against God in some way or other. Jesus Who was Sinless suffered  in our stead. We should therefore not complain but always submit to the will of God like Christ did.

  • Like the good thief on The Cross said to the bad thief, "our punishment is just."

They say, self pity is "cured" by humility and gratitude.

Nobody likes to be humbled, least of all me!

  • Friend OP, I give you the 12th chapter of the Imitation of Christ:

    Quote
    The Value of Adversity

It is good for us to have trials and troubles at times, for they often remind us that we are on probation and ought not to hope in any worldly thing. It is good for us sometimes to suffer contradiction, to be misjudged by men even though we do well and mean well. These things help us to be humble and shield us from vainglory. When to all outward appearances men give us no credit, when they do not think well of us, then we are more inclined to seek God Who sees our hearts. Therefore, a man ought to root himself so firmly in God that he will not need the consolations of men.

When a man of good will is afflicted, tempted, and tormented by evil thoughts, he realizes clearly that his greatest need is God, without Whom he can do no good. Saddened by his miseries and sufferings, he laments and prays. He wearies of living longer and wishes for death that he might be dissolved and be with Christ. Then he understands fully that perfect security and complete peace cannot be found on earth.

  • This came to mind:

Epistle Of Saint Paul To The Hebrews 10:31-39

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But call to mind the former days, wherein, being illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions. And on the one hand indeed, by reproaches and tribulations, were made a gazingstock; and on the other, became companions of them that were used in such sort. For you both had compassion on them that were in bands, and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods, knowing that you have a better and a lasting substance. Do not therefore lose your confidence, which hath a great reward.

For patience is necessary for you; that, doing the will of God, you may receive the promise. For yet a little and a very little while, and he that is to come, will come, and will not delay. But my just man liveth by faith; but if he withdraw himself, he shall not please my soul. But we are not the children of withdrawing unto perdition, but of faith to the saving of the soul.

    Suffering...is actually a good thing.

I always suspect that anyone who says this hasn't really suffered. I've been in unrelenting pain for at least the last decade. Here I am dying, alone and poor, while my father lives it up in unrepentant sin. I hate this to my core. How is this just?

When things are going good - thank GOD.  When things are going bad - then REALLY THANK GOD because he is blessing you more with suffering !

In order to understand suffering you have to get away from the worldy view of suffering - of time and - of eternity.

Think of it this way - a Person Sins exceedingly in life - is rich - is famous  -owns property - has relationships with many women etc - the envy of the Worldlings.

He dies - stands before GOD and has to render an accounting for his life - is summarily sent to Hell for eternity.

Another man is in financial ruin - is homeless - curses GOD for his plight and the same fate is his.

A third person lives an average life - commits his share of mortal sins - but confesses and does penance for them practises lives a long heathy life and in his faith but dies and is sent to purgatory for 1000 years.   He saved his soul!  He will be in heaven as soon as he is cleansed.

A fourth man lives an average life - commits his share of mortal sins - but confesses and does penance for them practises his faith in earnest. Shows GOD his remorse. Is Charitable. Is devoted to the Holy Rosary. Begs GOD for forgiveness. Wants his Children to save their souls.  GOD sends him Cancer of the Pancreas.  He suffers miserably for a year - pain ridden every day. But he suffers in silence offering up his suffering for the greater honor and glory of Almighty GOD uniting himself with Christ in Christs passion.  He dies - not a day spent in Purgatory - now in Heavenly Glory for ALL ETERNITY!!!!

    So the question

    Which scenario would you choose?

    Pax

  • Literally stared at one of my crucifixes, to keep what little was left of my "good self" in control of the raging bad guy inside of me  :really-mad2:, while I had a difficult conversation on the telephone.

  • The only thing that I could think of to be grateful for today (that didn't make me rebel inside), was how beautiful a day it was.

  • Humility was in short supply today, but I kept winding up feeling totally alone and really needy.  (I'm not actually;  I'm super lucky, but sometimes things end up seeming really, really bad).  Feeling that way is crushingly humiliating.   :faint: :pop: :fryingpan:

It didn't occur to me that I should be grateful for that, but I was thinking that God had something to do with it and I was sarcastically thanking Him  :really-mad2:(progress perhaps, but certainly not perfection)   :laugh1:

  • Someone said just the right thing to me today, in just the right way, at just the right time.  Their eyes seemed so kind and understanding at that moment.  It was just what I needed and I thought God had decided I'd fallen low enough for the moment and was giving me a little boost.
