When you give to the poor, God Himself will repay you

I seem to remember reading something along those lines by a saint. That God is sort of "compelled" to repay us when we give to those who can't pay us back, the poor of course.

I'm sure such statements must be all over various works, but does anyone have one in specific?

Since when?  He may repay you, He may not.  We are commanded to give alms regardless!

We can never be more charitable than God, so when we exercise charity to our neighbor, God will surely repay us 100-fold (obviously this is not why we act charitably; we do so to follow God's law.)  God rewards us for being good, just as He punishes when we are bad.  It may be in graces or in material things - this depends on His divine wisdom.

God will most certainly repay you, but not necessarily materially.  What merit is there to give a donation with the full expectation that God will pay you back?  Sometimes He does.  I've also had situations where I almost immediately received back the exact amount I had donated.  But God gives that more as a sign (message) about how pleased He is with the almsgiving.

Mat. 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

God not only punishes us for sins we commit, He also rewards us for the least bit of good that we do. Whether He does that in this world or the next, we cannot say with any certainty at all. All we can say with certainty, is that we will be rewarded.
