  • Fr. Champagne, RIP, had a series of talks.  He recalled priests saying Mass in 15 -20 min and it nauseated him.  Fr. Leblanc, RIP of Our Lady of the Sun had Fr. Hesse to visit.  Fr. Leblanc asked him to leave, for his Mass was said swiftly and he liked the wine.  Fr. Leblanc was noted for saying, "I can treat you better", referring to Christ.

  • Is this Sunday Mass they speed through or Daily Mass? Is there a lot of people at Mass or just a few?

I would ask the 2 priests directly if possible, if not, talk to the one with the authority. Not that he will actually do anything about it, although he might, but I would not be afraid to ask. Either way, it's not likely going to change anything and you may end up simply trying to follow as best as you can.

If you decide to ask, maybe you could phrase it something like this:
Father, I am slow at everything, including praying my Mass prayers and am having trouble following along with Fr. "X," and am missing a lot of prayers, can you suggest a way for me to follow better?
    Both Sunday and daily.

  • A swiftly-reading priest might be able to offer a Requiem Mass in 15 to 20 minutes. I had a priest relative who could offer a weekday Low Mass in 25 minutes with a 3-minute homily included.

  • Timed it, took 35 minutes from ringing of the bell to entering sacristy. No sermon.

I sat up close to see if I could hear the Consecration and I couldn’t. Didn’t hear a word. With the other priests you can hear every word and they say them slowly.

35 minutes isn’t really an issue and is probably the average from what I’ve seen. It sounds like the issue might be the Priest’s annunciation or pronunciation or volume or some other issue.

someone more knowledgeable than me might know this but I think the rubrics do specify that the propers of the Mass and other prayers (basically everything except the Canon and some parts of the offertory) should be said in an audible voice. Nonetheless I’ve been to Masses where the priest spoke so quietly that it was impossible to hear.

Assuming the readings aren’t too long (Holy Week or ember days or something) and there aren’t too many communicants, for a normal weekday Low Mass, 45 minutes is very long.

Did you remember to turn up your hearing aid this time? :jester: Be glad you are not at a Dialogue Mass!

35 minutes isn't considered too fast by any stretch ... may actually be a slight bit on the longer side.  So the issue, as someone else pointed out, isn't with the speed, but perhaps with his volume or pronunciation, etc.  There's no requirement at all for you to be able to hear every word.  You pick up your Missal and can determine if you're about on target based on various cues regarding what's taking place in the sanctuary.  Priest genuflects and starts Prayers at Foot of the Altar, priest bows for Confiteor, altar boys bow for Confiteor, priest ascends steps, priest moves to right side of altar, priest returns to center, priest starts Epistle, transfer of Missal to Gospel side, priest starts Gospel, etc. etc.  Just by following visual cues, you can usually be very close to where the priest is at.  I'm not sure why you think you need to be word for word "in sync" with the priest.  You wouldn't hear them on a Sunday in a larger chapel if you were towards the back anyway.

I'm not trying to throw any shade at the poster, but that's a Novus Ordo mindset --- "gotta be following along, gotta see where he is in the book".  I can always spot "newbies", refugees (or even curiosity-seekers) from the Novus Ordo, if they have a missal, they're frantically trying to follow along, trying to keep their place in it.

I did that the first time myself, had a yellowed old hand missal my father got at an estate sale (he was always going to those).  I thought it was going to be like a Novus Ordo Latin Mass (which I had attended on occasion).  I learned something that day.  (It was Fr Ringrose's Mass at St Athanasius.)

    What does this mean?
