  • So the Pope comes out a day and says:

Now we're going to say this in such a way that the simple and unwary won't be able to understand what we really mean.  We're going to reconcile the Church with liberalism and post-Christian society.  We're going to admit that other religions are worthy reflections of man's search for truth.  We're never again going to act as though the state owes obedience and worship to God in the true religion, because, what is truth, right?  I mean, if you read our writings, you can see we no longer truly believe in miracles or in the authority of the Bible.  Read Teilhard, Rahner, etc, if you want to understand what we really think.

We're going to reform everything in order to achieve unity with other Christians, as not to make them think we really have different positions than them.

We've changed, but for the sake of argument we have to say we're still the same.  I'm sure you understand.

We believe, not in anything real, but in belief, in humanity, the human heart.

Don't worry about Hell for believing the wrong religion, but understand that we will use the old censures and threats against those who impudently claim that they can carry on the Faith as it used to be without us.

Those people are outside the Faith!  We have the Faith.  The new Faith.  Which is the same as the old Faith.  All wise men can see that we do - and if fools should try to say we don't, we will drive them away.  And unlike the case of the naked Emperor, we don't have to worry about little children blowing our cover - they won't understand our true opinions.  We will change their worship, to better reflect the new Christian community in the modern world.  Don't worry, 99% won't know the religion they've never known.

And yes, we're the Church, the real Church.  Anyone who claims otherwise is cut off.  Schismatic!!!

  • Would such a man, with no Faith, still be Pope?
