  • Where did they go before? Why did they do it? How did it affect their family life? Did they ever come out of it?

  • The Catholic Faith is a habit of life. With no Sacraments or Mass attendance, you're going to go downhill slowly but surely.

The "Japanese Catholics" were NOT unscathed by their 2 century break from Mass and the Sacraments. I'm sure they had countless heresies to deal with, and the people had to really hit the books with much "catching up to do" when priests finally returned to the islands.

Also one could speculate that God would supernaturally preserve these people if they had no choice but to not go to mass.  To not go when there are clearly good Traditional options to choose from, and expect God to do that anyway, would be like that whole joke about the guy who drowned in a flood because he trusted God to save him when God sent him two boats and a helicopter to save him.

    Exactly!

If it's meant to be, and outside your control, then you can count on God to give you the extraordinary graces to save your soul.

But if you take it upon yourself, because you're stupid, you choose to trust and listen to the wrong experts *cough* DIMOND BROTHERS *cough*, you are too picky (expecting perfection from priests, organizations, and/or congregations), then the consequences are all on you.

That is for three reasons. 1) they did not have good faith formation (which is par for the course of those converted by missionaries), 2) they had no access to Catholic resources (we have the Internet), and 3) their pagan ancestor worship was too strong to not influence their religious practices.
Do you really think the Japanese Catholics had Denzinger? They probably didn't even have a complete Catechism since their books were destroyed. You can't compare the two.

  • You can't live and PRACTICE the Catholic Faith without Mass and the Sacraments. Not unless God means for you to.

Just like with martyrdom. You should never seek it on your own. It must be God's idea. That is because torture is too much for most people to endure without breaking -- especially the weak. But when it's God's will, He (and he alone) provides the strength. (as seen by the large number of women and children martyrs) But if you ever find yourself under "Catholic persecution" torture, as soon as you stop praying, you will snap under the torture and probably lose your soul. It's that simple.
