  • Some people consider others their friends very easily but what criteria is good to use to actually determine what makes a friend?

    In my opinion...

A true friend is one who is willing to suffer to help you when you are in need and who has your salvation utmost in their mind.

  • Read Chapter 6 of Ecclesiasticus
6:11 A friend if he continue steadfast, shall be to thee as thyself, and shall act with confidence among them of thy household.  12 If he humble himself before thee, and hide himself from thy face, thou shalt have unanimous friendship for good.  13 Separate thyself from thy enemies, and take heed of thy friends.  14 A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found him, hath found a treasure  15 Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend, and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity.

A true friend is one who is willing to suffer to help you when you are in need and who has your salvation utmost in their mind.

An excellent opinion and an advisable one to follow.

Trouble is that its application in daily life can sometimes lead to the stark realization that one is without true friends and even without family. The pain of that is enough for some, sadly, to abandon that good and sound opinion for the sake of human respect and the soothing comfort of false smiles and opportunistic caresses, till that day unavoidably comes round again for an even more rude awakening.

At that point, our only option is to recognize that the truest and only reliable friends are Our Lord, Our Lady, and the angels and saints.
Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. He who has God finds he lacks nothing; God alone suffices. - St. Teresa of Jesus

  • In his book Self-Knowledge & Self-Discipline, Fr. B. W. Maturin says that moral sympathy is a prerequisite for friendship.

Moral sympathy is essential when you have wronged someone and seek to make amends, but it is also necessary when you see that person wronged and can truly understand and be there for them. We can see how this applies especially to our friendship with God because holiness consists of friendship with God, and without keeping the commandments, we are not His friends- precisely as Our Lord says in the gospel.

As Soubirous said, if we think about it, we may see that we do not have many friends at all.

One of the things I learned during meditation was how lonely God must be at times… Remember Jesus in the Garden? I do my best to remember this when I am going through hard times. God, in fact, does sympathize with me. He knows what this is like. What better person is there to share this moral sympathy with?

    Truly powerful to me.

    God bless you.

  • All of these are good posts.

I have learned from my own experiences that God is really a jealous God and wants you all for Himself.  Any extra friendship is just consolation.

It is true what St Augustine says "My heart will not rest until it rests in Thee, Lord."  The only True friend you need is God.

I do realize that it is hard to apply in the practical sense, but I do believe that as one grows in holiness this love and friendship of God will grow exponentially.  And God will never be out done in generosity.

It is best to surround yourself with people who understand the true purpose of living is to be with God always.
1 Corinthians: Chapter 13 "4 Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; 5 Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;"

  • Be a friend to Jesus, and He will be your friend. He's the one friend worth having.

  • Im opposed to the over generalisation of friendship. I make clear distinction between acquaintances, companions, and friends in my life. A true friend to me has to be catholic, have common interests, and helpful in growth spiritually. On that note, I don't see the whole socialisation ONLY"to know people" necessarily beneficial. God bless.

THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, so that we may love you with all our heart, by always having you in mind; with all our soul, by always longing for you; with all our mind, by determining to seek your glory in everything; and with all our strength, of body and soul...
