  • Jesus tells his followers to feed the hungry, to give water to the thirsty, to clothe the naked and visit the imprisoned.

Does everyone here visit their local prisons?

Do you mean everyone or anyone? I don't know about everyone, only about me.

At present I don't because where I live is too far from the local prison. I have done it in the past, most recently in response to a prisoner who sneaked a letter to the editor out of the prison asking for someone to write to him. I wrote to him and visited him and when he was released he visited my home. I lost contact because we moved.

I often wish I could do this work. My husband would happily do it with me. I have also written to prisoners on death row in response to a Salvation Army officer who was wanting people to share her work. The need is very great.

  • That is likely something more suited to someone in the single state, as you only have yourself to worry about, it may not be such a great idea for married persons.

That's true when your raising a family, but there comes a time when the children are independent of you.

Also, time spent (wasted?) on the internet could be more profitable writing to a prisoner, no?

Can you tell us more? There is a great need for spiritual reading in prisons.

  • Something that doesn't involve so much time with background checks and can be done "behind the scenes" would be volunteering with a place that is supposed to help them after release.  Most of them seem to be Protestant. If you can't do in person work then see if the local men's shetler has a list of needed supplies like Chlorox wipes, coffee creamer, XL men's socks things like that.

I talked to the captain at the prison in town a while back and asked if I could have needlework classes but he said even if I walked in with 10 instruments and counted 10 instruments when I left they would still find them in the population so it was basically a no go. I've read about prison knitting programs though.

  • In many (if not all) jurisdictions in the United States anyway, one may not simply visit prisoners.  One must be on a list of approved visitors of specific inmates.  The government simply will not allow any Tom, Dick, or Harry to walk in off the street and visit with the prisoners.

Some church organizations are allowed to visit with some prisoners, but these organizations also have to be pre-approved.

I don't see the possibility of just "visiting" the imprisoned today.

It is true that an ordinary person can't simply walk into a prison and ask to visit with prisoners.  However, there are organization one could get involved in to visit prisoners.  Additionally, as Tiffany pointed out, there are many ways to help individuals after they have been released from prison, either while they are in a halfway house, on parole, or the like.

Often.  How about visiting people before they end in jail.

Often. I think when they mean by visit those imprisoned is visit those who are wrongfully incarcerated.
