  • My nephew's partner has given birth today to a beautiful baby boy, but....

The cord was twice around his neck and he is on life support and is expected to die once that is turned off. The parents do not intend to baptise him.

Please pray for their conversion and that some other person will baptise him.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Oh, dear...
One of my siblings had that happen with the chord, and his face was blue when he was born...  He did not have to be on life support though...
I certainly shall be praying...  Please keep us posted...

  • Thank you for your prayers. He has been baptised and received the last rites (NO).

He is having seizures and a decision will be made probably tomorrow about taking him off life support. So please continue to pray for him, and especially for his parents.

Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers.

Joyful news he has been baptised.  He is now in the most perfect state of grace a human can be.
So why does the NO think a baptised infant could possibly need last rites?

Last rites often reinvigorate the body.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

OP here. Yes, joyful news indeed!
We were taught that the sacrament of the dying (to which category our little boy appears to belong) is known to sometimes bring a new lease of life. Although the family believe that he will die, or at least, although his Grandfather appears to hold out little hope for his survival, maybe God wants him here for a longer period.
The absolutely best result could be the conversion of his parents, so please continue to pray.

70 years ago we were taught the same thing, but only for those who had reached the age of reason and older.
Extreme Unction wasn't given to infants or preschool children who were baptised (but the priest might have still prayed with the parents and blessed the child)  just like their funeral was in white instead of black and many flowers were displayed.
The NO really doesn't have last rites;  they have anointing of the sick.
God can always bring good from sorrow.
    Prayers for the parents conversion.

  • You are right.
    .

    http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05716a.htm

    Quote
sacrament of the New Law instituted by Christ to give spiritual aid and comfort and perfect spiritual health, including, if need be, the remission of sins, and also, conditionally, to restore bodily health, to Christians who are seriously ill; it consists essentially in the unction by a priest of the body of the sick person, accompanied by a suitable form of words………………

    ...

    (1) Extreme Unction may be validly administered only to Christians who have had the use of reason and who are in danger of death from sickness…….
    .

……… It is not so easy to explain on internal grounds why extreme unction must be denied to baptized infants who are sick or dying, while confirmation, for instance, may be validly administered to them; but such is undoubtedly the traditional teaching and practice.
     .
These quotes make me wonder if indeed he was confirmed. The family could have been confused about what actually was received by hands of the priest. Anyway, either is a bonus.

  • I have just got the message that the life support will shortly be turned off.
The child is assured of Eternal Salvation.
His father decided on Baptism but his mother has no faith. Please pray for his parents for faith and understanding.
