  • Can anyone recommend a book that teaches how to be happy in an unhappy marriage?

  • The story of St. Rita is an amazing source of inspiration:

    This section is particularly helpful:

  • I would suggest The Catholic Marriage Manual by Msgr. George Kelly.

You can find it online or for sale from various publishers.  It is a pre-Vatican II book with solid advice on marriage.

  • I cannot in good conscience recommend the rest of their products, but Lighthouse Catholic Media has an excellent disk of Bl. Ab. Fulton Sheen, here.

I also recommend by Fr. Raoul Plus.

If you have children, the newly reprinted Mother Love is an excellent resource for daily life, complete with a quite lovely prayer for one in an unhappy marriage.

I will include you and yours in my prayers. May you find strength and peace.

  • Why are you unhappy in your marriage?

Maybe talk to your priest.   Go to mass And confession together.

What is wrong with the couple going to see their priest?  The couple that prays together stays together.

  • And sometimes people are unhappy in their marriage is because they fail to communicate with one another.

  • Someone posted a couple years ago a story that could be read on the internet.  Venerable Eliza Betta.  I can't recall, the only thing that I can remember is "Betta" she lived during the 17 or 1800's  and her husband treated her so bad and she had 2 daughters and had to live in the streets.  She prayed very hard and kept her daughters doing the same.  In the end, her husband was so remorseful after her death that he became a monk/priest and his first mass was for Betta.  One of her daughters became a nun.  If anyone can pull that up, that was good reading.

  • Marriage may turn out to be "happy" or "unhappy", it really does not matter because happiness is not our goal in life.  To be able to be content while enduring an unhappy marriage is a grace from God.  Persevere in prayer, work at doing what is right regardless of your spouse.  God will hold you responsible for your own behavior, and your spouse will be held responsible for her/his own actions.  Our joy in life comes from following God's will, not in being happily married, or financially well off, or anything else.

Can you think of any other hints?  I can't find anything on a Eliza Betta, or Betta, or Venerable Eliza/Betta and I would love to read more about her.

I am sorry if this it too off topic, but Bl. Archbishop Sheen?  Has he been beatified, and if so how on earth did I miss that?
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Marriage is a Holy sacrament.  There is nothing wrong with happy Marriage.   With God, there is love.

The Catholic Marriage Manual was the first gift I gave to my then girlfriend, who then became my wife about 11 years ago.

Her mother thought I was sending a present and was surprised that it was a a half century old book.

It is old, but every Catholic thinking of marriage should read it.  It is as relevant today as it was during the days of Pope Pius XII.
