  • Tomorrow is the Feast of the Sacred Heart.  It's a double first class feast day.

Does double first class on a Friday give us the OK to eat meat?

I thought it was only on Holy Days of obligation.

  • I'm still unsure after reading this, so it's probably not that helpful!

Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
    ~James 1:27

  • Spaniards have a permanent papal dispensation to eat meet on Fridays.

It was given to them due to their perseverance in 700 years of fighting the Mohammedans.

  • For Americans, basically never.  One exception is the Friday after Thanksgiving, which was an indult granted to American Catholics by Pius XII (or X, can't remember).

I'm not sure if there's permission for Holy Days or First Class feasts.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Just checked, it was Pius XII.

The dispensation was granted to help clear out refrigerators.  It would seem that in keeping with the spirit of this generous act of HH Pius XII, that one should be prudent to exercise it with leftovers.

  • dispensations can include pregnant women, possibly, and children under age 7, and those over age 60, those are my quick thoughts.  If you are so poor and have nothing else to eat, you can.  Check your missals.

So what? Did it kill you to eat fish?

BTW you did not have to eat fish, just not meat.

Even if you had gotten your anwer quickly, it would have been not to eat meat.

Maybe next time don't try to educate yourself on Church law while in a ruch at the checkout. You could take it a bit more seriously.

  • I pack meat in my hubby's lunch on Fridays because meatless doesn't do it for him.  He works physical labor and he needs the sustenance.  But I serve meatless for breakfast and dinner and of course me and the children are meatless the whole day.

Were men who worked manual labor before the council dispensed from the obligation?

  • Here is an exception to partial abstinence:

    Quote
The use of meat on such days is not restricted to the principal meal for such as are exempt from fasting by reason of ill health, age, or laborious occupations.

  • It's a complete fallacy to think meat gives you sustenance to work hard and nothing else will do.
