  • Is the marital act morally prohibited all throughout pregnancy?

    How long after childbirth is the marital act morally allowed?

    1.  The marital act is not prohibit during pregnancy.  It is lawful for the entire pregnancy.

    2.  It may not be possible for a couple to enter into the marital act after childbirth for health reasons.  As soon as that has passed, it is moral.

  • There are medical dangers though for having relations too soon after childbirth.

    Sometimes women are put on pelvic rest during parts of pregnancy.

  • As to the first question, the marital act is not prohibited during pregnancy, except perhaps when it would endanger the baby (a rare circuмstance).

    As to the second question, I recall reading that a husband sins mortally if he demands the marital act within three weeks following childbirth, and that he sins venially if he demands it between four and six weeks following childbirth.
