Long haul driving is awful for the family life.

Yes, I could see where it could take a heavy toll on the spiritual life as well.  I tried it once, but couldn't hack it for two reasons: I couldn't back the stupid thing.  Now, I mean, it took me more than an hour to try and back a 53 foot trailer between two parked 53 foot trailers.  While your trying to concentrate and aiming at doing everything they teach you; just try concentrating on not damaging anything while some godless moron instructor screams at you like you were a new marine recruit.  That is something that will try your patience and calm.  First time in my life, as far as I can remember, I thought about 'murder'.

The second possible 'reason': I'm too 'clean cut'....to 'polished'; or just not 'dirty' enough or 'rough around the edges'.  Trucking companies thrive on 'dirty talking, dirty looking, over eating 'people'...especially some of the 'woman' where I was at.   :devil2:

Now take that and double it, because life "on the truck road" is that nature you will always find.  Then you'll have three times the charity towards that lady or man who overdoes it with the perfume or cologne at Mass on Sunday Mornings.... :laugh1:

That does seem pretty insane.

Is truck driving an awful job or a good one?  What's your opinion?  How can you be a good truck driver?  What shouldn't you do?

Either you will love it or hate it. Its not one of those jobs for anyone not interested in it.

I drove for three years in my mid 20's.  I loved it for 2 years and 9 months and then hated it for the last three months.

I had a brother in law killed while asleep while his partner was driving.   So it isnt the safest job either.

Is that why you hated it for the last 3 months?

No , he was killed recently - April 2012

I'm sorry to hear that.  They say the job is very dangerous.  It's easy to see why.

So why did you hate it for the last three months and why aren't you doing it anymore?

I last drove in 1982 - I hated it because I was never home for important events. I didnt quit the company I was working for at the time , I was promoted. I dispatched and then became a Manager.

I can testify to the truth of this observation. I worked at a motel once that was a trucker's haven. Likeable people though.
