  • How would you convince a Protestant of the fundamental Catholic dogma of Transubstantiation?

    This person insists that the host is only a symbol.  :really-mad2:

    Any thoughts?

    That is how we did it.

  • Make a copy of the old mass and tell him to read it. Tell him to study it. Pray for him. Starting from the Ordo Missae,prayers at the foot of the altar.

  • I think that the basis of the rejection is contempt towards the figure of the priest.

    Then it sounds like you should work on convincing them that the priesthood is real, instituted by Christ.  Then the rest should follow.

    Pray for them, of course.  But our faith is not based on things which can't be proven!  So become an efficient apologist for the priesthood so that you can answer your friends objections.
    "Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • From the Gospel of Matthew;
    26:26
    26:While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, "Take and eat; this is my body."

    From the Gospel of Mark;
    14:22
    22:While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body."

    From the Gospel of St Luke;
    22:19
    22:Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."

    Protestants will say that Christ was speaking symbolically to counter this. The symbolic claim can't be proven based simply on the bible alone - so it essentially refutes protestantism.

    Protestants accept Sola Scriptura until it refutes their heresies.

  • Don't forget John Chapter 6 -- one of the most powerful for this.

    Our Lord tells them unless they eat his body and drink his blood, they won't have eternal life.

    Many walked away and stopped following Jesus at this point.

    Did Jesus stop them? Did He clear up the massive misconception? No.

  • If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • I think this is one of the hardest subjects to explain to a Protestant, especially one who has not studied anything other than what they hear at church on Sunday. They would probably have to be willing to sit through a crash course of Catechism beforehand, and very few are going to be interested enough to take the time and effort to do so. (After all, if they don't put hours of study into their own brand of religion, why would they do it for one that they don't understand, and already 'know' is wrong?) Especially when it contradicts everything they have ever heard. If a Protestant can leap the hurdles of Transubstantiation, Marianism, and Tradition vs Sola Scriptura, then I believe the Holy Ghost has acted upon them.
