  • Lately I have been wondering about the 2 major trad newspapers Catholic Family News and The Remnant.  I have seen some good materials in both papers.  What are in your opinion the pros and cons of each?  Help me decide which one to subscribe to.

  • Despite the romantic notion of the printed word (which I share, I'll admit), I also realize that newspapers and magazines (both Catholic and secular) are pretty much useless these days. If you want to get all the latest Catholic news, avoiding "gatekeepers", you need to head to alternate news venues like CathInfo.

When Father ___ posted the Letter of the Three to the One back in May 2012 which started the whole Resistance phenomenon, how long until the Remnant and CFN responded? And did they post even 1/4 of the relevant material for your consideration?

  • I would have to agree, you will find the most timely info online.  That said I do find some good general articles on CFN.  Do not waste your money on the Remnant, way too modernist.

How could The Remnant be Modernist when Michael Matt is speaking at the Angelus Press confrence this year?

  • Why Michael Matt would ever be considered a "modernist"?

  • I stopped reading CFN about 2 years ago.  If I want to read a book I'll buy one;  I bought the newspaper hoping there would be many newspaper length articles that would keep me informed but the CFN insists on writing booklength articles.

  • If you are looking for a traditional Catholic newspaper, consider subscribing to The Four Marks rather than those.  The Four Marks is a monthly paper but it is a truly Catholic and traditional paper.

Bad advice, stay away from this poster.

The Four Marks, even for a non-sede isn't a half bad paper. It is more gusty and much more like what the Remnant used to be before it became a tame lap dog.

  • Talking about newspapers in general, let's put it this way.

Take a recent event (like the SSPX Crisis going public in May 2012), since recent events are a good indicator of today's reality. Where did you go for the latest news about SSPX/Rome? Were you content with the percolated soundbites and outright propaganda from some quarters, or were you looking for a bit more info (sermons, announcements, even unconfirmed reports to be taken with caution)? Where did you look for this info -- newspapers? I doubt it. You probably came to CathInfo (and/or Ignis Ardens), since most sites wouldn't even allow discussion of this topic. The SSPX sure wasn't telling us much. They didn't even announce when one of the 4 bishops was expelled!

So that gives you a concrete example of how newspapers have been marginalized and largely made obsolete and irrelevant.

  • The best of all is CI, just go to the internet and enrich yourself daily
with daily different opinions. And, it does  not cost.
It is no use to subscribe to get something in the mail. That is now
wasting monies. Matter of fact, who reads everything in a newspaper.
If it is not online, avoid it. Save money. You will hear about it on a
    free blog site.
