Trad Catholics aren't supposed to fit into the world. And even if they were suppose to not be so-called nutters, it's only about 4 people on the forum who obsess over flat earth. Most intelligent people can see that. It's only when you're knee deep in the flat earth discussions themselves that the flat earth group seems larger than it really is, you get emotionally invested or frustrated, and then make posts like the one above.

    Anyone else?
Just has no bearing to the salvation of my soul.
    ^This.  Totally.

    I agree with OP.
Currently 13 "recent topics" that are flat earth related.  I thought this was  a traditional Catholic website...
I was glad that at least Matthew banished it to its own subform. But the problem is, ever since the revamping of CI, there's that "recent topics" list, which is almost always vastly populated by FE and threads on the pope question.  In the old CI format, one would have had to look in the subform. Makes me kinda wish there wasn't that "recent topics" sidebar.

Some would say, "If you don't like the topics, just start some yourself on worthwhile topics."  Problem is, I have too little time, with real crosses in life to bear.  And I guess that's partly what it boils down to:  The people who post are those who don't have real issues in life taking their time & attention, so they have oodles of time to devote to subjects with absolutely no practical application to their spiritual/moral life whatsoever, such as FE.

I suppose the silver lining to all this is when I quickly glance at CI to see if there are any important headlines, and all I see is FE & more interminable discussion on the pope issue, I don't have to feel bad that I don't have time to read all posts.  I am consoled that I'm not missing anything.

  • It has everything to do with your soul if the Church condemned it.
What possible part can the shape of the earth play in our salvation or what possible reason would the Church have to even care about it, let alone condemn either idea?

Answer to both questions is: NONE. The whole silly topic is mainly for those who watched too much Star Trek, Star Wars and other sci-fi flicks.

  • I've been waiting to see if Matthew objected to this thread being posted here rather than in the Flat Earth sub-forum. Since he has been on the forum and not said anything, I guess it's OK.

I post to the Flat Earth sub-forum a lot, but I agree with the people who think it is bad for Cathinfo and want to get rid of it.  I post there because I think it is better for there to be people expressing disagreement with flat-earthers than leaving them unopposed.  I'm concerned that keeping silent would give the impression that they speak for all of us.

As others have said, it is not relevant to salvation and there is no good reason for them to carry on as they do.  I am especially troubled that most of them claim or imply that believing in flat earth is a necessary part of being Catholic.

  • Here are the results from a fairly recent poll.  I threw the "this debate is ridiculous" option in as an afterthought.  This is a less than ideal poll design because it did not allow for those who wanted to say both that they think the earth is a globe and that they think the debate is ridiculous. I am sure that is a significant number of forum members.

Is the earth shaped like a globe?

    Yes, it is.
    21 (43.8%)

No, it is flat.    10 (20.8%)

This debate is ridiculous and I wish it was not allowed on Cathinfo.    14 (29.2%)

    other     3 (6.3%)

  • I see no reason to ban discussion of the Holocaust, the shape of the earth, or any other secular/historical/scientific topic not decided on infallibly by the Church.

It would be hypocritical of me to criticize the Jews who say we can't investigate the claims of the Holocaust, but darn it, Thou Shalt Not discuss the shape of the earth on CathInfo!

Sorry, it goes against my principles to ban discussions for no good reason. If someone gave you a verbal boo-boo, just avoid that subforum in the future. I've taken measures now so that Flat Earth topics won't be "in your face" all the time, on the home page. They will only exist for those who click on that subforum now. You have to enter the Lions Den to see them now.

We have to assent to the dogmas of the Catholic Faith. Beyond that, discuss away and have your own opinions! Just keep in mind they are just that -- opinions -- and you can't bind them on others, much less under pain of mortal sin.

You're not the Pope, after all!

PS. That doesn't include the Anonymous subforum, however. Discussion of Flat Earth is limited to the Flat Earth Subforum ONLY.

What happens when people disagree on what the dogmas of the Faith are?

From what I can see, a large proportion of the discussion in the Flat Earth subforum is on the question of whether it is a dogma or Church teaching.  Since apparently most of these f.e. proponents think it is a Church teaching, telling them that they can't bind their opinions on others makes no impression on them.

You must run into this dynamic in regard to other issues.  Do you have a general policy?

  • By restricting them to their own subforum, they can argue it out among themselves and those who are interested.

Further, by hiding the posts from the front page and "Recent Topics" lists, it won't make the forum seem filled with their topics.

If they can't bring up the topic with the CI population at large, this denies them the opportunity to condemn others in the way you mentioned.

If they can't live in peace though, despite all this, and still find some way to condemn members by the droves, they will be banned just like a dogmatic sedevacantist. In other words, such members aren't worth keeping around anyhow.

But if you go into their hive, you have to have thick skin. Don't come crying to me if someone was uncharitable, if you enter the proverbial lions' den.
