  • Yeah, some of it is really hard to take, the dialogue is generally awful, but there are parts that are good.  The background of Salzburg is really wondrous.

    Julie Andews accent - just too strident.  Christopher Plummer was too young for the part.

    Still, it's not all bad, considering the source.

  • IMO, The Sound of Music was an injection of cultural anaesthesia.  It would allow Catholics to feel accepted and to bathe themselves in nostalgic feelings while the demolition of the "Catholic bastions" was beginning to ramp up.

    And yes it inserts the nαzι boogeyman and Julie Andrews represents a kind of "anti-authoritarianism" - although those are rather mildly subversive elements.
