  • I believe I just read something a few days ago stating that Pope Pius XII had enacted the Feast of the Holy Face in the 50's and had indicated that no actor portraying Our Lord should have his face shown.  Is this true?  And if so, where can I find this information?

Also, on youtube, there is a film version of our Lord's Life, Passion and Death, in black and white, that is played along with Father Patrick Peyton's recitation of the Rosary.  Our Lord's Face is not shown in any of the scenes I've viewed.  However, from King of Kings to the Greatest Story Ever Told to Jesus of Nazareth all the way to The Passion, the actors playing Jesus have their faces shown.

Does anyone know anything about this?

  •  On April 27, 1910, Pope Saint Pius X approves the Feast of the Image of the Holy Face, with Rite of greater Double in the Third Feria, after the Sunday of Quinquagesima (Shrove Tuesday) for the diocese of Cambrai, France.

Pope Pius XII may have extended the feast day universally.

As a child (1940's-50's)I too remember that Jesus' face was not to be shown in film.
However, Hollywood now thinks otherwise when it comes to Jesus.
But when it comes to the Muslims, Hollywood bows down and at the beginning of the film THE MESSAGE, the story of Mohammad, there is a notice that his face will not be shown out of respect yada yada yada.

it's likely because pictures are seen as vanity in Sunni Islam (Shia does not, there's a lot of pictures of Muhammad in Iran), so showing a picture of the Prophet to devout Sunnis is highly blasphemous
