Sri Lankan “Martyrs?”

  • Question:

Are the murdered Sri Lankan Catholics technically/theologically considered to be martyrs?

On the one hand, I thought anyone who was murdered because they were Catholic would be considered a martyr.

But then someone pointed out to me that, were an Islamic extremist to detonate a nuclear bomb in Dublin, all the nominal liberal Irish abortionists, contraceptionists, divorces and invalidly remarried, ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs would have to be considered martyrs, and be in heaven.

    That seems impossible.

Someone opined to me that a real martyr would actually have to CHOOSE TO DIE RATHER THAN  BETRAY THE FAITH.

Hence, the Sri Lankans would not really/technically be considered martyrs.

This is true with a few exceptions   For example early missionaries spreading the faith didn't have that choice,
they were just murdered.  Some of the Cristeros weren't given the opportunity to choose but you could say they all made their choice when they embarked on their mission.
I'd always been taught the martyrs at some point made a conscious decision for Christ that held true danger to their life.
