  • My husband and I will be married for three years next month.  We have one child so far, and do not use birth control.  Recently the woman who runs social functions at my chapel told me that because we have only had one child in three years and I am not pregnant, we are suspected of using birth control, and will no longer be welcome at any chapel get togethers (picnics, coffee after Mass, etc.).  I complained to the priest, but he said he's not getting involved in this, but will not deny us the Sacraments.

    What should we do?

  • I don't think there is anything you can do if they suspect you even though you say you are innocent. It is a cross to bear for sure.

  • 1. Go anyways
    2. Ask her to help you get pregnant, have her review your fertility chart and attend doctors visits with you
    3. Go to a different chapel that isn't populated with a bunch of gosips and a priest who can't keep belligerent women under control

  • Wow.  I don't know which reaction is worse:  the woman's or the priest's.

My husband and I have NO children.  Because God hasn't blessed us with any (probably due to our age).  It would take a lot for me not to give both of them a piece of my mind.

There is no way I would continue going to that chapel.  Then again, if it were my only option for the Sacraments, I would have to do so.  I sure hope you have other options.

  • Reading things like this make me SO disgusted with the modern-day Pharisees that masquerade as Trads.

I'm sure it makes them feel SO good about themselves. They are just SO darn holy, as they look down on those rotten birth-control users.

Why don't they worry about their own souls? But Catholicism is so much more fun when the pressure is taken off oneself, and redirected towards others!

Too bad. We're responsible for OUR OWN soul, and not that of others.

We would all do well to worry about our own salvation, which is NOT as certain as some would have us believe.

Remember, no one gets a free ride into heaven. Jesus can raise up stones to be the seed of Abraham. That goes for us Trads too. God can raise up new Trad Catholics from among the atheists, let alone protestants or Novus Ordo Catholics.

God doesn't need us, strictly speaking. We need to prove how much we love Him by showing our love for others and following His Commandments.

In a sense He "needs us" to pray for, instruct others, and in general perform the spiritual/corporal works of mercy. But in the strict sense He doesn't need us.

I agree with this course of action.

They can't keep you away. Let THEM make a scene. You can just continue to be a good, humble Catholic and let those gossips send themselves to hell by their rash-judgment and gossip.

  • Yes, a cross you bear, or leave.  This nosy woman thinks she knows it all, but is a know nothing.  Every woman does not have a perfect cycle and some really think so.  Some have no fertility til age 31 have a child or 2 and pre menopause begins.  I have seen a lady give birth to one at age 41 and no more.  And these were women praying to have a child.  And they were not abnormal, it was normal for them.  Some women ovulate only once a year and that is normal for  them.

This woman must think she is in charge.  If the priest said he offers you the sacraments, that is a nice way of saying that what this lady said, is not in acceptance with the priest.

I had a New Order lady look at my 4th pregnancy and pointed to my womb and said to 2 protestant women standing by that my pregnancy was a mistake.  And that was in front of our 12yr old daughter.

  • I guess this kind of Pharisaic behavior strikes a chord with me.

I think you hit the nail on the head about the woman -- she is a bully, and she probably has a reason for being particularly quick to shine the spotlight on others' faults (real or perceived).

There is a saying, "Mind your own darn business" that should be thrown at this woman -- preferably by your husband. If this happened to my wife, I'd be quite angry righteously indignant about the injustice done to my wife's good name.

  • Another thing, I think many people have a Discovery Channel mentality about women's fertility. They see an episode of some science show on Cable or Dish TV about a woman giving birth at 50 or something, and assume that "women can give birth up till 50". I guess that mistake is understandable.

    But it's still a mistake.

As countless contracepting women discover to their horror every day, fertility is NOT constant nor does it extend well into one's forties. Fertility drops off at different rates, at different times, for different women.

And being able to conceive is NOT the same as being able to deliver a live baby. I know of one devout Catholic who conceived on more than one occation in her early 40's but had miscarriages. She is quite sad that she can't have another baby.

It's the same mistake as the pagan/atheist that moans, "Don't use birth control!?!?!  I can't handle 12 children!"

See? They all assume that if you don't use birth control you'll have 12 children. Isn't that cute.

Those with a bit less ignorance know otherwise.

  • I guess if Blessed Mother and St. Joseph showed up at that chapel they'd get shunned too.

Seriously I don't think the busy body or the priest should get away with that kind of treatment.

Would you disclose your medical info to the congregation?  of course not... they have no business insinuating themselves in your marriage.

Hope you have the courage to demand the priest address this woman.

  •   The problem with bullies like that lady is that nobody would see it coming.  When those types have gone after me, I was totally blindsided and speechless with shock and confusion.  Bullies need slamming down hard; there's no other way.  The fact that the priest won't back you up just makes me sick.

Maybe you can print this thread out and give it to the sinful rash-judger, contumely-infested church lady who thinks she runs the chapel.  I guarantee you are not her first target.

Who even thinks about other people's marital situation, let alone try to run them off accusing of mortal sin against marriage???

  •  :applause:

For these people, if you aren't suffering in private, they will be glad to help with a little public humiliation before they lift a finger to do a work of corporal mercy.

I have had five miscarriages, some as late as 13 weeks. No one has ever offered any act of mercy towards me, but I have been subject to their little inquisitions. I've been questioned by men and women, by (formerly) close friends and casual acquaintances.

Once you realize someone is a Trad-Pharisee the best thing to do is to stay away and not let their bad influence cause you to join their ranks. If you are already one, quit. Think well of everyone and do penance.

  • That is absolutely shocking.  Especially the priest's response.

I would be sure to go to the next event and if she said anything I would tell her (if I was feeling charitable)  that I would appreciate her prayers for more children.

If I was feeling bold I'd tell her something like "gee, my DH and I have *ex 5 or 6 times a week and nothing is happening, do you have any recommendations?" :laugh2:

  • I presume my family wouldn't be welcome at that chapel either.  After all, my wife and I have been married for 24 years and we only have 5 children!

If I had a choice, my choice would not be that chapel.  It is unfortunate, however, that there are many areas in this wide world where one is lucky to be anywhere near just one chapel.
