SSPX - US. Shut Down 3 Chapels

    • Does anybody know what 3 SSPX chapels were recently shutdown in 
    the US District, and why?  

    It seems the Society sells the church and takes all the $$.   Is that right?  Do they have a history of doing this?

    Any Catholic Info about this phenomenon would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • Apparently, the SSPX has a recent history of selling off parishes that are not generating money for them.

    • I was told there problems with real estate years ago involving in PA.  I think it went to court.

    • What is the average size of an SSPX chapel in the US? An SSPX priest told me that " chapels in the US each have around 500 faithful". Some years ago, in my presence, another SSPX priest told a N.O. one that the total strength of SSPX faithful in the US is around 20,000. So, if it has 20 chapels the figure would be 1,000 per chapel.
    The OP states that 3 chapels have been closed. Because they had too few faithful and were not "viable"?

    • They have the funds to run some of them at a loss in the service of the salvation of souls, but they do not have the will.  It does not fit their present business model.

    Salvation and sanctification is never a matter of numbers and profit and loss.  The sheep are wandering about at the mercy of merchants.

    • Or are they closing chapels because of mismanagement.
    A chapel was handed over to the SSPX FREE AND CLEAR of debt.
    Within a couple years it needed a new roof and the priest started a fund raiser.
    The people asked "Where is all the money we've been giving?"
    Answer " to pay the mortgage !"
    Who got all the money?

    • If it is a mortal sin to miss Mass, then it must be a mortal sin to remove Mass and close chapels.

    • Well what on Earth are these chapels supposed to do then, when the Society sells their church, closes the mission, and takes off with all that money--money that came from the hard work and sacrifices of the families?

    In a position like that, it becomes extremely difficult for their Mission to continue, let alone grow.

    What could be done?  Appeal to the District Superior Fr. Wegner?  The Super General Bishop Fellay?  Even the Vatican?

    Can they still retain some of that equity to build a new church?  Or are they screwed?
