  • I wanted to discuss something I think the SSPX does not dare talk about: the facilities and church buildings. Do you know that a SSPX parish in Canada had their building paid off, but they did a refi to take the equity out of the church so they could put it towards the new seminary?

Another friend of mine saw an SSPX building for sale. The SSPX sold it and consolidated into a smaller place. I'm not sure where, but I think it was in Kansas.

Also, in Louisiana there use to be 150 parishioners but now there are only 40. I have been informed that that my old SSPX chapel is in the process of getting an appraisal, because they are thinking about selling it -- they cant afford the insurance on the building. The funny thing is, that building was paid off, so maybe the SSPX did a refi on it too, I don't know.

  • This is all very interesting.  Just last week, Fr. Schmidberger paid an unannounced visit to our Chapel.  He seemed quite preoccupied and aloof.  My husband wondered if he was there on a reconnaissance mission in preparation for a future sell-off.  Could it be?

  • I believe these "church assets" belong to the people!   We Are The Church.  We built it with our funds.  It. Boggles my mind that this continues as long as they get their tax free status we will not be told the truth about so many things.... But folks continue to tolerate it.

If you're proposing taking away their tax exempt status and putting the property into the collective hands of others, I believe the Democratic Socialists beat you to it.

The church was Holy Face in St. Catharines which was paid for.  When Father Marcel Knault, an independant priest died, the SSPX was invited but of course they wanted ownership of the church and property.   A few years later when it needed a new roof the congregation, thinking they had a nice little nest egg in the kitty, found it had been mortgaged and there were no funds for the roof.  This was at least a decade before the new seminary

. Why not put ownership into a group cooperative of parishioners that vote on issues effecting their church?   We spend, we work we build but we do not own.  And Tax exemption Is a huge issue as its used by the Govt to keep priests and pastors in line and as such often hotter issues are not ever aired.
