  • I know that in the girl camps there are daily Masses.  I wonder who serves those Masses since only girls are in those camps.

    Why should girls not camp?

If the camp doesn't espouse heresy and promotes a vision of the True Faith for women (that is, no feminism of liberal ideas) it could be fine.

:dancing-banana: See the "Self-sufficient Hobbies, Anyone?" thread.
I don't know if SSPX girls' camps do actual camping, or if they are mainly for socialisation with other girls, fun game and crafts, campfire sing-a-longs with daily Mass and Rosary.  I get the feeling the boys' camps are better for teaching useful skills.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  •  I went every year to the girls camp back when Fr Pfeiffer was the chaplain. He always brought an older man from one of his chapels or from the Pittsburgh chapel to serve and to have another man on camp with him (I think). One year the brother of one of the girls came and served everyday.

I can understand the appeal of volunteering for such an office... sure, he's the "brother" of ONE of the girls, but all the other girls only have one guy to go googly-eyes over. You know how girls are.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with an all-girls camp run by a good, Traditional Catholic organization. Such a camp will be a source of true Catholic  friendship, ideals, and influence for young women at a critical age.

Not only do women NEED friends and socialization more than men, they also need the influence of Catholic peers and the vision and teaching of a good Catholic priest. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing female sports in a female-only fashion (with no male audience, etc.) It's not like they're going to play American football or rugby.

As for roughing it outdoors, that is something EVERYONE needs to get some experience with.

  • I just asked my daughter about who serves at Masses at Camp St. Philomena.  This is not the SSPX summer camp for the girls; it is the summer camp for girls run by the CMRI at Mount St. Michael's.  I think it might be safe to say that the SSPX summer camp would not be too different in this respect.

Firstly, she told me that most of the daily Masses they attend are at the main chapel of the Mount.  It's a regularly scheduled Mass, so there are people there not attached to the camp at all.  There are servers, either men or boys at the Mass.  They have no other interaction with them.

There are some Masses they attend that are more or less exclusive to the camp.  However, the camp is not in an isolated location hundreds of miles away from the nearest male of the species.  She told me that they have always had either a man or a boy serving each of the Masses.

I think the opening post is concerned over a non-existent problem.  These traditional Catholic summer camps run by the SSPX and the CMRI are not problematic and there is certainly no reason to believe that the priest saying Mass at either camp cannot find at least one qualified man or boy to serve Mass.

I simply do not understand why some people seem to assume the worst in every issue.  It would be one thing if they were talking about the Conciliar church and a summer camp run by the Novus Ordo sect.  By the way, I've got an advertisement here for CYO summer camps in Indiana.  They do even have separate camps for boys and girls but, rather, "BOYS' & GIRLS' CABINS"--I presume that means separate cabins for boys and for girls, but, frankly, I don't know for sure--actually, I'm sure they have separate sleeping and toilet facilities for the boys and girls for, at least, liability issues.

There's a typo in the above statement.  It should have read:

"They do not even have separate camps for boys and girls..."

  • I loved attending church camp as a teen. My best childhood memories were made there. Sadly many of my friends that I attended with were better chaperoned there than at home or in public school. There was never a time when boys and girls were in one another cabins. Many friends had boys over after school or were alone with boys in bedroom on the weekends.

  • If the camp is run by the SSPX, you have absolutely nothing to worry about!
