  • From an sspx bulletin this week…

FOUNDERS DAY/MENENDEZ LANDING SEPTEMBER 4TH. at the Mission Nombre de Dios and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine. Members of the Historic Florida Militia and the entire reenactment commu- nity will recreate the events that would have occurred on both of those historic properties in September 1565. 10am - The day's events will start with the recreation of the Landing of Pedro Menendez de Aviles and the Founding of St. Au- gustine. 11am - A Novus Ordo Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Felipe Estéves at the Rustic Altar, the very spot the first Catholic Mass, in what would eventually become the United State, was celebrated. After Mass, visitors will be al- lowed to mingle with the living history interpreters for photo opportunities and to ask questions. Admission to the events at the Mission are free. 1pm – Grand Procession of the his- torians, ceremony participants, and mission pilgrims from the Mission Nombre de Dios property along city streets and through the main gate of the Fountain of Youth Archaeo- logical Park. 1:30pm - Recreation of the real First Thanks- giving, the one that occurred here in Saint Augustine 55 years before the Pilgrims ever stepped foot on Plymouth Rock, will then take place. After the feast, visitors and guests will once again have a chance to mingle among the living history interpreters. Admission to the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park for those not participating in the reen- actment is: Adults - $19.95; Seniors (60+) - $17.95; 6 to 12 - $9.95; 5 & under – Free

  • They do say Novus Ordo mass, which would be a warning to the real trads. I wonder what an outdoor Novus Ordo mass would be like, everyone 6 feet apart wearing masks and receiving communion in the hand? Anyhow, since the plandemic, the SSPX chapel in that Central Florida has become 2/3' Novus Ordo's who know little about tradition.

It’s not only in the central Florida chapel. The South Florida chapel is about 90% Novus Ordo after the pandemic.  We are talking about people who would never attend an SSPX chapel before COVID.  The Shrine of St. Philomena in Miami, which celebrated the TLM for30-years, was shut at the height of the pandemic in a cruel and twisted money grab opportunity.  The Florida Prior is obsessed with money and building bigger buildings.

I understand your frustration. I have lived the situation that you describe for over 10 years now, seeing people (parents and their children) retrogress in the faith and others who were newcomers, at best, did not grow in the faith. It is all from the bad example that you mention. I have pondered on this for those 10 years and have concluded it to be a punishment from God upon those that were not really living the faith. It has no effect upon those that live the faith and take care of their own spirituality, not requiring anything but the real sacraments which these SSPX ordained priests do administer. So thank God that he gave you the eyes to see the errors and that he gave you valid priests, and take care of the rest yourself. Do not expect more from the SSPX priest and you will not be disappointed. Pray for the conversion of all of the people who are being punished for their sins.

If true, this is huge. Even among the other evidence against the SSPX.

It's unfortunate that the SSPX is encouraging the faithful to attend a Novus Ordo, even if it commemorates the Catholic founders of St. Augustine, FL.
However, I don't think it's always the case that Novus Ordo types are going to be a big problem in a trad parish. It depends on the pastor. If he understands that the Novus Ordo folks aren't going to know the Faith, then they can take the opportunity to teach them, as Fr. Chazal does. Fr. Chazal encourages Novus Ordo Catholics to attend his parish in the Philippines, and it seems to work out fine.

It's likely be the case, however, that SSPX priests are not going to take it into account that there is an influx of Novus Ordo types, and teach accordingly.  But it is a case-by-case situation. Some SSPX priests may be willing to go the extra distance to deal with this type of situation, and some will not.

Yes, it’s true. I and others have posted on the situation over the months here.  The last mass at St. Philomena was in March of 2020 when the city went into lockdown.  I know because I was there, it was packed wall to wall.
Two months later, in an online letter from the prior, he announces that they were closing down the Shrine because the mass center in the county up north had seen significant mass attendance from the closed neighboring Novus Ordo parishes.   The Shrine is currently being sold.  Remember that an independent priest willed the chapel to the SSPX to care for the souls he left behind.

I agree.  My spiritual life has been damaged by this event, as has my trust in the SSPX.  I continue to try and grow in faith even though it is no longer in the SSPX but an independent chapel.

That is a good question. In the old SSPX mass center, I attended they use to have a big poster warning about the dangers of attending the Novus Ordo. Now they have no such thing, only little pamphlets about who the SSPX is explaining their apostolate, etc.

  • It is my understanding that a Novus Ordo Monsignor said Mass there in Florida today. I forget his name but he was the “bathroom” Monsignor posted about here several years ago. The same church wants $20,000 to renovate a portable classroom instead of for now over 10 years not using money wisely to have a permanent school structure.

Regarding St Philomena’s too; remember Father Hopkins passed away suddenly too and willed, trusted the church to the SSPX. Poor Father; they abandoned many of his sheep.

So sorry to hear that the SSPX have abandoned many of the sheep at St. Philomena's. Were there still many faithful from when Fr. Hopkins was there?

  • This is not historically accurate it seems because the novus Ordo is a 1960’s mass.
